1392 : un roi de 24 ans devient fou. Pendant trente ans, il va vivre une vie de souffrances, entre des crises atroces et des rémissions qui le laissent lucide et anxieux. Quelle était cette maladie ? Comment affectait-elle ses relations avec sa femme, Isabeau de Bavière, avec son frère, le brillant duc d'Orléans, marié à la belle Valentine Visconti, avec ses nombreux enfants ? Comment était-elle ressentie par ses sujets ? Scandale, fléau de Dieu, châtiment pour des péchés collectifs ? Seule l'écoute du discours du roi malade et des hommes de son temps, avec leur langage, leurs croyances, leurs peurs, permet de répondre à ces questions. Le règne de Charles VI passe à juste titre pour désastreux : guerre civile des Armagnacs et des Bourguignons, guerre de Cent Ans, la moitié du royaume conquise et occupée par les Anglais, le traité de Troyes, l'abandon de la couronne à Henri V, roi d'Angleterre, le dauphin déshérité, la France vaincue, coupée en deux, humiliée et partout les divisions, la misère, les ruines. Mais, derrière le désastre, se décèle le lent progrès des structures. Le sentiment national naissant, Jeanne d'Arc elle-même, peuvent s'expliquer par l'identification qui se produit entre la nation souffrante et son roi de douleurs.
