Résumé de la thèse : Guerre et littérature de jeunesse française (1870-1919) : de la voix officielle à la matérialisation littéraire et iconographique : -De 1870 à 1919, la littérature enfantine française se fait l'écho de mutations sociologiques, pédagogiques et idéologiques. Etudier l'impact de la guerre sur les publications de jeunesse implique une recherche en amont des décisions officielles, une observation en aval de leurs répercussions sur les livres scolaires, parascolaires et extrascolaires. Le coeur de la problématique réside dans la question de l'obédience ou de la déviance des ouvrages enfantins par rapport aux consignes étatiques. La décennie scolaire 1880-1890 constitue à cet egard un palier décisif dans l'orientation vers la morale en action. Les abécédaires, les albums illustrés, les livres de bibliothèque relaient l'idéologie officielle et transforment l'épanouissement civique en exaltation cocardière. L'iconographie s'allie aux romans nationaux sous la bannière tricolore. L'armature chronologique de notre étude, traumatisme de 1870, période transitoire, Grande Guerre, détermine des paradigmes littéraires et idéologiques. La consultation des textes officiels accuse une imprégnation patriobelliciste et germanophobe des esprits juvéniles. L'originalité du projet tient à la rareté des recherches actuelles en matière d'axiologie des livres enfantins de guerre. Les failles concernant la période 1914-1918 expliquent l'intérêt particulier accordé à la littérature contemporaine du conflit. En dépit de leur taxation propagandiste, les ouvrages découverts et la production imagière alors en plein essor révèlent des trésors insoupçonnés d'ingéniosité littéraire que seule une production substantielle peut restituer.

In 1992, Art Spiegelman's two-volume illustrated work Maus: A Survivor's Tale was awarded a special-category Pulitzer Prize. In a comic book form, Spiegelman tells the gripping, heart-rending story of his father's experiences in the Holocaust. The book renders in stark clarity the trials Spiegelman's father endured as a Jewish refugee in the ghettos and concentration camps of Poland during World War II, his American life following his immigration to New York, and the author's own troubled sense of self as he grapples with his father's history. Mixing autobiography, biography, and oral history in the comic form, Maus has been hailed as a daring work of postmodern narration and as a vivid example of the power of the graphic narrative. Now, for the first time in one collection, prominent scholars in a variety of fields take on Spiegelman's text and offer it the critical and artistic scrutiny it deserves.
