Dit boek verkent de situatie van vrouwen van Turkse en Marokkaanse herkomst die in Vlaanderen in armoede leven. Via diepte-interviews verwierven de auteurs een beter inzicht in hun leef en belevingswereld: Welke zijn hun noden en behoeften? Hoe evalueren en ervaren zij hun sociale positie? Wat verwachten zij van hun toekomst? Zien zij kansen of vooral belemmeringen om vooruit te komen?Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat deze vrouwen heel wat creativiteit in huis hebben om met hun beperkt budget rond te komen. Ze ontwikkelen daartoe verschillende overlevingsstrategieën. Voor de toekomst zetten ze vooral in op hun kinderen, het geloof in het verbeteren van de eigen sociale positie is niet bijster groot. Bijzondere aandacht gaat naar de rol van het sociaal kapitaal van de vrouwen. Onder welke voorwaarden zijn hulpbronnen uit het sociaal netwerk beschikbaar en helpen deze hulpbronnen hen net genoeg rond te komen of geraakt men er echt door vooruit?
