Abstract

Currently, families are being subjected to increasing public attention with interest focusing on their potential strengths and weaknesses in determining how well children do at school. Parents and children are at the forefront of the welfare state and socio-educational activities in current programs and policies. This book examines the resulting changes in the relationship between families and the state, and the shifting borders of public and private responsibility in education, child care, and childrearing. It considers international and national debates that underline the fact that issues in private life are increasingly entering the public discourse and becoming subject to attempts at socio-political control. Finally, it discusses the growing politicization of parenthood in the (post) welfare state and the increasing attention being paid to the structural conditions of gainful employment and child care as well as to the current relations between the genders.

Abstract

Advanced Control of Turbofan Engines describes the operational performance requirements of turbofan (commercial)engines from a controls systems perspective, covering industry-standard methods and research-edge advances. This book allows the reader to design controllers and produce realistic simulations using public-domain software like CMAPSS: Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System Simulation, whose versions are released to the public by NASA. The scope of the book is centered on the design of thrust controllers for both steady flight and transient maneuvers. Classical control theory is not dwelled on, but instead an introduction to general undergraduate control techniques is provided. This book also: Develops a thorough understanding of the challenges associated with engine operability from a control systems perspective, describing performance demands and operational constraints into the framework and language of modern control theory Presents solid theoretical support for classical and advanced engine control concepts,  including new analyses of the min-max selector systems frequently used in commercial engine control systems Has a bottom-up, progressive approach establishing a unified framework for the analysis of classical and advanced engine control schemes, with a strong design orientation Provides detailed coverage of advanced techniques such as adaptive control, sliding mode control and model predictive control as applied to gas turbine engines. Covers public-domain, high-fidelity simulation resources, allowing the reader to reproduce the simulations of the book and to develop a basis for independent controller benchmarking studies Advanced Control of Turbofan Engines is an ideal book for aerospace or mechanical engineers with basic knowledge in control systems, control engineers unfamiliar with gas turbines, and first year graduate students in mechanical, electrical, or aerospace engineering.

Abstract

Adolescents are generally thought to be healthy. However, adolescent risk behaviours, such as substance use, a poor diet or early sexual activity, are topics that keep generating high academic and media interest. Despite considerable explanatory efforts, not much is known yet about the proximate and distal determinants as well as the psychosocial and health-related consequences of risk behaviour in adolescence. The study is among the first to systematically examine the antecedents and consequences of risk behaviour from a comparative perspective over time and across countries. Matthias Richter presents findings from several empirical studies and extends current theoretical and empirical knowledge on adolescent risk behaviour. This book is valuable reading for academics, practitioners and policy makers in a range of disciplines: sociology, psychology, educational sciences, public health and nursing sciences, with a special focus on adolescent risk behaviour.

Abstract

Projective geometry is one of the most fundamental and at the same time most beautiful branches of geometry. It can be considered the common foundation of many other geometric disciplines like Euclidean geometry, hyperbolic and elliptic geometry or even relativistic space-time geometry. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to this fascinating field and its applications. In particular, it explains how metric concepts may be best understood in projective terms. One of the major themes that appears throughout this book is the beauty of the interplay between geometry, algebra and combinatorics. This book can especially be used as a guide that explains how geometric objects and operations may be most elegantly expressed in algebraic terms, making it a valuable resource for mathematicians, as well as for computer scientists and physicists. The book is based on the author's experience in implementing geometric software and includes hundreds of high-quality illustrations.

Abstract

This book enters new territory by moving toward a new conceptual framework for comparative and interdisciplinary research on transcultural state formation. Once more, statehood and governance are highly discussed topics, whereby modern state building is often considered to be a genuinely European characteristic, despite the fact that early modern Europeans knew of, experienced and grappled with highly developed states in Asia. The articles collected in this book discuss how strategies of governance were part of transcultural transfers between the two continents. The first part presents and discusses concepts of statehood in order to provide a set of conceptual tools for analyzing the transcultural appropriation of governmental strategies. The second part is concerned with case studies that examine the transcultural perception of governance, and the third and final part gathers perspectives on political practice in transcultural encounters (e.g. military, administration, and diplomacy)

Abstract

eat shock proteins (HSPs), also called stress proteins, are not only induced in response to elevated temperatures, but also as a result of various stress situations, including environmental strains, viral H infection, ischemia, anoxia and oxidative stress. These stress situations trigger cellular defence mechanisms that act as an emergency system capable of combatting the toxic consequences due to the accumulation of misfolded proteins. Heat shock proteins are involved in many physiological processes, including development and differentiation, organisation of the cytoarchi tecture by binding to cytoskeletal elements and regulation of the balance between cell death and survival. Many heat shock proteins work as molecular chaperones. In this role, they contribute to in vivo protein folding and prevent nonproductive interactions with other proteins and cellular c- ponents. In recent years it has been found that the chaperone system and the proteolytic machinery work closely together, and that proteasomal - hibition causes the upregulation of stress proteins. Impairment of the proteasomal machinery and chaperone functions lead to protein damage, which contributes to neurodegenerative disorders and to the aging process.

Abstract

Despite great improvement in service delivery, patient violence remains a major problem at mental health facilities. Focusing equally on causes, management, and prevention, this groundbreaking book represents the state of knowledge on this crucial topic. Violence in Mental Health Settings brings together salient theories, valuable data, and real-world interventions in one accessible volume. The contributors include psychiatrists, nurses, researchers, and academics (many affiliated with the European Violence in Psychiatry Research Group), offering an integrative context for understanding patient aggression and identifying areas where research is lacking. Chapters review the latest theories of violence, proven prevention strategies, and examples of positive organizational change. Practical highlights include: -Assessing and measuring risk: self- versus other-reporting scales -How the ward environment can contribute to violence or its prevention -Best practice guidelines for verbal, physical, and pharmaceutical interventions -Training issues and course development in violence management -Professional coping after patient attacks -Developing a non-violent culture at the institutional level Throughout, the material is illustrated liberally with graphs and clinical case examples, and coverage bridges the patient-rights and zero-tolerance ends of the spectrum. Therapists, nurses, social workers, and counselors in hospitals and other inpatient and community facilities will find Violence in Mental Health Settings a source of vital insights and ideas for future policy. Regardless of one's setting or specialty, the authors share a critical aim with their readers: a safer and more humane experience.
