Abstract

This book is the first to take a comprehensive view of the challenges that population ageing present in the near future taking Sweden as the case. Can the increasing number of retirees per worker be stopped by immigration or increasing fertility or will we need to increase pension age instead? Cost for the social-care system is readily increasing; even more is the costs for health care. Can the galloping costs be funded by an increase in taxes or do we need to make reforms, similar to the ones already made in the pension system, which has been used as a model for many other countries. The fact that it is difficult to make health care dependent on personal contributions, as is the case of the pension system, funding of health care is a true test of solidarity across generations. The book ends with a discussion on whether the demographic challenge to the welfare system is also a threat to the welfare state as such.

Abstract

The SRI phenomenon is said to be entering the mainstream of financial intermediation. From a fairly marginal practice promoted or campaigned for by NGO's and at odds with financial practice and orthodoxy it grew into well formulated policy adopted by a wide range of investors. Academic literature on SRI has also boomed on the assumption that mainstreaming is taking place. However, little thinking has been carried out on questions specifically arising from this alleged ˜mainstreaming'. This book, addressed to those with a scholarly or practitioner's interest in SRI, starts filling this neglected dimension.  Today, one cannot ignore the difficulties of main stream financing.  The financial spheres are trembling globally in one of the worst crises since the 1930's. As a response to the crisis, the intermediation of ˜financial responsibility' will undoubtedly be the subject of new regulation and scrutinizing.  This book looks into what these turbulences will imply for SRI.  In view of these circumstances, one might or even should, ask oneself whether the phenomenon was not an empty fad during the exuberant high of financial euphoria that came abruptly to an end with current financial crises.  To put it rather sec: are financial intermediaries that promote ˜sustainability' credible, while it is obvious that some developments in financial intermediation -predictably, as some say- were unsustainable?  Is this an opportunity for enhancing SRI because of the strength and superiority it has developed or will it disappear due to a return to financial myopia? This book is the first to question the future of SRI in such a radical way.

Abstract

This book on Classical micro- and macroeconomics collects revised versions of papers which were written between 1983 and 2000, some jointly with coauthors, and it supplements them in a coherent way with recent unpublished work on the issues raised and treated in them. It attempts to demonstrate to the reader that themes of Classical economics, in particular in the tradition of Smith, Ricardo and Marx, can be synthesized into a coherent whole from the perspective of formal model building as well as applied Leontief-Stone Systems of National Accounts and the Input-Output approaches built on them. This reformulation of Classical economics differs significantly from the static Neoricardian formalization of the Classical approach to economics. In these days when the properly working of the market has become controversial, it is worth going back to classical economics and to study of how the classical dynamic mechanisms, for example the invisible hand in the sense of Adam Smith, were supposed to work to bring about stability, equilibrium and welfare. Having written many books and research papers on the dynamics of market economies, Peter Flaschel very competently takes on this issue in this current monograph. This book will definitely play an important role of reviving classical micro- and macroeconomic dynamics. Willi Semmler, New School University, New York This book is a must-read. It provides a comprehensive, original analysis of classical theories of prices, values, and distribution, which combines the utmost theoretical and mathematical rigour with a significant empirical orientation. Indeed, it outlines the foundations of an alternative analysis of capitalist economies and it is likely to become a classic for all scholars dissatisfied with standard approaches. Yet any open-minded economist would find that the arguments provided have the rare quality of challenging a number of long-held beliefs. Roberto Veneziani, Queen Mary University of London

Abstract

Until recently, regional labour market imbalances were considered transitory phenomena, a consequence of state failure in generating distorted investment incentives in depressed regions as well as of excessive labour market rigidities. Labour mobility and wage flexibility were at the core of the debate over the causes of and cures for regional labour market imbalances. This book bears witness to the changed perspective of research on these issues. In the recent literature, internal labour migration is depicted as a cause of further divergence between advanced and backward regions, as higher returns on human and physical capital are expected to be paid in those regions where these factors are already concentrated. The book contributes to the debate by presenting important new findings on: a) the reasons why structural change in some sectors causes a slump in some regions, but not in others; b) the extent to which poverty traps explain regional imbalances as compared to such other alternative factors as spatial dependence and nonlinearity in growth behaviour; c) the degree of convergence across EU countries and regions; d) the role of labour mobility in reducing/increasing regional labour market imbalances, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe; e) and the role of an active labour market policy and child care facilities in alleviating the hardship of the weakest segments of the population.

Abstract

For decades, issues regarding the sustainability of the welfare state have been an important agenda in both academic and public debate. The existing literature primarily points out to economic globalization and post industrial developments as drivers behind recent welfare state change. Ingmar J. Schustereder investigates the relative influence of these factors and examines to what extent different national systems of social protection have preserved their core institutional features over time. He applies a combination of econometric and qualitative techniques using data of 17 leading OECD countries from 1975 to 2005.
