Abstract

The famous zeros of the Riemann zeta function and its generalizations (L-functions, Dedekind and Selberg zeta functions) are analyzed through several zeta functions built over those zeros. These ˜second-generation' zeta functions have surprisingly many explicit, yet largely unnoticed properties, which are surveyed here in an accessible and synthetic manner, and then compiled in numerous tables. No previous book has addressed this neglected topic in analytic number theory. Concretely, this handbook will help anyone faced with symmetric sums over zeros like Riemann's. More generally, it aims at reviving the interest of number theorists and complex analysts toward those unfamiliar functions, on the 150th anniversary of Riemann's work.

Abstract

The main focus of this textbook, in two parts, is on showing how self-similar solutions are useful in studying the behavior of solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations, especially those of parabolic type. The exposition moves systematically from the basic to more sophisticated concepts with recent developments and several open problems. With challenging exercises, examples, and illustrations to help explain the rigorous analytic basis for the Navier--Stokes equations, mean curvature flow equations, and other important equations describing real phenomena, this book is written for graduate students and researchers, not only in mathematics but also in other disciplines. Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations will serve as an excellent textbook for a first course in modern analysis or as a useful self-study guide. Key topics in nonlinear partial differential equations as well as several fundamental tools and methods are presented. The only prerequisite required is a basic course in calculus.

Abstract

With a fresh geometric approach that incorporates more than 250 illustrations, this textbook sets itself apart from all others in advanced calculus. Besides the classical capstones--the change of variables formula, implicit and inverse function theorems, the integral theorems of Gauss and Stokes--the text treats other important topics in differential analysis, such as Morse's lemma and the Poincaré lemma. The ideas behind most topics can be understood with just two or three variables. This invites geometric visualization; the book incorporates modern computational tools to give visualization real power. Using 2D and 3D graphics, the book offers new insights into fundamental elements of the calculus of differentiable maps, such as the role of the derivative as the local linear approximation to a map and its role in the change of variables formula for multiple integrals. The geometric theme continues with an analysis of the physical meaning of the divergence and the curl at a level of detail not found in other advanced calculus books. Advanced Calculus: A Geometric View is a textbook for undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics, the physical sciences, and economics. Prerequisites are an introduction to linear algebra and multivariable calculus. There is enough material for a year-long course on advanced calculus and for a variety of semester courses--including topics in geometry. It avoids duplicating the material of real analysis. The measured pace of the book, with its extensive examples and illustrations, make it especially suitable for independent study.

Abstract

Several mathematical areas that have been developed independently over the last 30 years are brought together revolving around the computation of the number of integral points in suitable families of polytopes. The problem is formulated here in terms of partition functions and multivariate splines. In its simplest form, the problem is to compute the number of ways a given nonnegative integer can be expressed as the sum of h fixed positive integers. This goes back to ancient times and was investigated by Euler, Sylvester among others; in more recent times also in the higher dimensional case of vectors. The book treats several topics in a non-systematic way to show and compare a variety of approaches to the subject. No book on the material is available in the existing literature. Key topics and features include: - Numerical analysis treatments relating this problem to the theory of box splines - Study of regular functions on hyperplane and toric arrangements via D-modules - Residue formulae for partition functions and multivariate splines - Wonderful completion of the complement of hyperplane arrangements - Theory and properties of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid and of zonotopes Graduate students as well as researchers in algebra, combinatorics and numerical analysis, will benefit from Topics in Hyperplane Arrangements, Polytopes, and Box Splines.

Abstract

Many problems in science and engineering involve the solution of differential equations or systems. One of most successful methods of solving nonlinear equations is the determination of critical points of corresponding functionals. The study of critical points has grown rapidly in recent years and has led to new applications in other scientific disciplines. This monograph continues this theme and studies new results discovered since the author's preceding book entitled Linking Methods in Critical Point Theory. Written in a clear, sequential exposition, topics include semilinear problems, Fucik spectrum, multidimensional nonlinear wave equations, elliptic systems, and sandwich pairs, among others. With numerous examples and applications, this book explains the fundamental importance of minimax systems and describes how linking methods fit into the framework. Minimax Systems and Critical Point Theory is accessible to graduate students with some background in functional analysis, and the new material makes this book a useful reference for researchers and mathematicians. Review of the author's previous Birkhäuser work, Linking Methods in Critical Point Theory: The applications of the abstract theory are to the existence of (nontrivial) weak solutions of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems for partial differential equations, written in the form Au = f(x, u). . . . The author essentially shows how his methods can be applied whenever the nonlinearity has sublinear growth, and the associated functional may increase at a certain rate in every direction of the underlying space. This provides an elementary approach to such problems. . . . A clear overview of the contents of the book is presented in the first chapter, while bibliographical comments and variant results are described in the last one. MathSciNet

Abstract

This book presents a largely self-contained account of the main results of convex analysis, monotone operator theory, and the theory of nonexpansive operators in the context of Hilbert spaces. Unlike existing literature, the novelty of this book, and indeed its central theme, is the tight interplay among the key notions of convexity, monotonicity, and nonexpansiveness. The presentation is accessible to a broad audience and attempts to reach out in particular to the applied sciences and engineering communities, where these tools have become indispensable. Graduate students and researchers in pure and applied mathematics will benefit from this book. It is also directed to researchers in engineering, decision sciences, economics, and inverse problems, and can serve as a reference book. Author Information: Heinz H. Bauschke is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus (UBCO) and currently a Canada Research Chair in Convex Analysis and Optimization. Abstract

This monograph presents the first comprehensive treatment in book form of shape-preserving approximation by real or complex polynomials in one or several variables. Such approximation methods are useful in many problems that arise in science and engineering and require an optimal mathematical representation of physical reality. The main topics are structured in four chapters, followed by an appendix: shape-preserving approximation and interpolation of real functions of one real variable by real polynomials; shape-preserving approximation of real functions of several real variables by multivariate real polynomials; shape-preserving approximation of analytic functions of one complex variable by complex polynomials in the unit disk; and shape-preserving approximation of analytic functions of several complex variables on the unit ball or the unit polydisk by polynomials of several complex variables. The appendix treats related results of non-polynomial and non-spline approximations preserving shape including those by complexified operators with applications to complex partial differential equations. Shape-Preserving Approximation by Real and Complex Polynomials contains many open problems at the end of each chapter to stimulate future research along with a rich and updated bibliography surveying the vast literature. The text will be useful to graduate students and researchers interested in approximation theory, mathematical analysis, numerical analysis, computer aided geometric design, robotics, data fitting, chemistry, fluid mechanics, and engineering.

Abstract

Recent results in local convergence and semi-local convergence analysis constitute a natural framework for the theoretical study of iterative methods. This monograph provides a comprehensive study of both basic theory and new results in the area. Each chapter contains new theoretical results and important applications in engineering, modeling dynamic economic systems, input-output systems, optimization problems, and nonlinear and linear differential equations. Several classes of operators are considered, including operators without Lipschitz continuous derivatives, operators with high order derivatives, and analytic operators. Each section is self-contained. Examples are used to illustrate the theory and exercises are included at the end of each chapter. The book assumes a basic background in linear algebra and numerical functional analysis. Graduate students and researchers will find this book useful. It may be used as a self-study reference or as a supplementary text for an advanced course in numerical functional analysis.

Abstract

Computational techniques based on simulation have now become an essential part of the statistician's toolbox. It is thus crucial to provide statisticians with a practical understanding of those methods, and there is no better way to develop intuition and skills for simulation than to use simulation to solve statistical problems. Introducing Monte Carlo Methods with R covers the main tools used in statistical simulation from a programmer's point of view, explaining the R implementation of each simulation technique and providing the output for better understanding and comparison. While this book constitutes a comprehensive treatment of simulation methods, the theoretical justification of those methods has been considerably reduced, compared with Robert and Casella (2004). Similarly, the more exploratory and less stable solutions are not covered here. This book does not require a preliminary exposure to the R programming language or to Monte Carlo methods, nor an advanced mathematical background. While many examples are set within a Bayesian framework, advanced expertise in Bayesian statistics is not required. The book covers basic random generation algorithms, Monte Carlo techniques for integration and optimization, convergence diagnoses, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, including Metropolis {Hastings and Gibbs algorithms, and adaptive algorithms. All chapters include exercises and all R programs are available as an R package called mcsm. The book appeals to anyone with a practical interest in simulation methods but no previous exposure. It is meant to be useful for students and practitioners in areas such as statistics, signal processing, communications engineering, control theory, econometrics, finance and more. The programming parts are introduced progressively to be accessible to any reader. Christian P. Robert is Professor of Statistics at Université Paris Dauphine, and Head of the Statistics Laboratory of CREST, both in Paris, France. He has authored more than 150 papers in applied probability, Bayesian statistics and simulation methods. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the recipient of an IMS Medallion. He has authored eight other books, including The Bayesian Choice which received the ISBA DeGroot Prize in 2004, Monte Carlo Statistical Methods with George Casella, and Bayesian Core with Jean-Michel Marin. He has served as Joint Editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B, as well as an associate editor for most major statistical journals, and was the 2008 ISBA President. George Casella is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida. He is active in both theoretical and applied statistics, is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the American Statistical Association, and a Foreign Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences. He has served as Theory and Methods Editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, as Executive Editor of Statistical Science, and as Joint Editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B. In addition to books with Christian Robert, he has written Variance Components, 1992, with S.R. Searle and C.E. McCulloch; Statistical Inference, Second Edition, 2001, with Roger Berger; and Theory of Point Estimation, Second Edition, 1998, with Erich Lehmann. His latest book is Statistical Design 2008.

Abstract

Many nonlinear problems in physics, engineering, biology, and social sciences can be reduced to finding critical points of functionals. While minimax and Morse theories provide answers to many situations and problems on the existence of multiple critical points of a functional, they often cannot provide much-needed additional properties of these critical points. Sign-changing critical point theory has emerged as a new area of rich research on critical points of a differentiable functional with important applications to nonlinear elliptic PDEs. Key features of this book: * Self-contained in-depth treatment of sign-changing critical point theory * Further explorations in minimax and Morse theories * Topics devoted to linking and nodal solutions, the sign-changing saddle point theory, the generalized Brezis–Nirenberg critical point theorem, the parameter dependence of sign-changing critical points * Applications of sign-changing critical point theory studied within the classical symmetric mountain pass theorem *Applies sign-changing concepts to Schrödinger equations and boundary value problems This book is intended for advanced graduate students and researchers involved in sign-changing critical point theory, PDEs, global analysis, and nonlinear functional analysis.
