Scaling transistors into the nanometer regime has resulted in a dramatic increase in MOS leakage (i.e., off-state) current. Threshold voltages of transistors have scaled to maintain performance at reduced power supply voltages. Leakage current has become a major portion of the total power consumption, and in many scaled technologies leakage contributes 30-50% of the overall power consumption under nominal operating conditions. Leakage is important in a variety of different contexts. For example, in desktop applications, active leakage power (i.e., leakage power when the processor is computing) is becoming significant compared to switching power. In battery operated systems, standby leakage (i.e., leakage when the processor clock is turned off) dominates as energy is drawn over long idle periods. Increased transistor leakages not only impact the overall power consumed by a CMOS system, but also reduce the margins available for design due to the strong relationship between process variation and leakage power. It is essential for circuit and system designers to understand the components of leakage, sensitivity of leakage to different design parameters, and leakage mitigation techniques in nanometer technologies. This book provides an in-depth treatment of these issues for researchers and product designers.

Ultra-Low Voltage Nano-Scale Memories provides an in-depth discussion of the state-of-the-art nanometer and sub-1-V memory LSIs that are playing decisive roles in power conscious systems. Emerging problems between the device, circuit, and system levels are systematically covered in terms of reliable high-speed operations of memory cells and peripheral logic circuits. The effectiveness of solutions at device and circuit levels is also described at length through clarifying noise components in an array, and even essential differences in ultra-low voltage operations between DRAMs and SRAMs. Moreover, various kinds of on-chip voltage converters necessary to solve problems with internal power-supply managements are extensively discussed. This authoritative monograph addresses these design challenges for memory and circuit engineers as well as for researchers and students who are interested in ultra-low voltage nano-scale memory LSIs.

CMOS technologies account for almost 90% of all integrated circuits (ICs). This book provides an essential introduction to nanometer CMOS ICs. The contents of this book are based upon several previous publications and editions entitled 'MOS ICs' and 'Deep-Submicron CMOS ICs'. Nanometer CMOS ICs is fully updated and is not just a copy-and-paste of previous material. It includes aspects of scaling up to and beyond 32nm CMOS technologies and designs. It clearly describes the fundamental CMOS operating principles and presents substantial insight into the various aspects of design implementation and application. In contrast to other works on this topic, the book explores all associated disciplines of nanometer CMOS ICs, including physics, design, technology, yield, packaging, less-power design, variability, reliability and signal integrity. Finally it also includes extensive discussions on the trends and challenges for further scaling. The text is based upon in-house Philips and NXP Semiconductors courseware, which, to date, has been completed by more than 3000 engineers working in a large variety of related disciplines: architecture, design, test, process, packaging, failure analysis and software. Carefully structured and enriched by in-depth exercises, hundreds of colour figures and photographs and many references, the book is well-suited for the purpose of self-study.

Substrate Noise Coupling in RFICs addresses substrate noise coupling in RF and mixed signal ICs when used in a system on chip (SoC) containing digital ICs as well. This trend of integrating RF, mixed signal ICs with large digital ICs is found in many of today's commercial ICs such as single chip Wi-Fi or Bluetooth solutions and is expected to grow rapidly in the future. The book reports modeling and simulation techniques for substrate noise coupling effects in RFICs and introduces isolation structures and design guides to mitigate such effects with the ultimate goal of enhancing the yield of RF and mixed signal SoCs . This is particularly critical when process feature sizes scale down to the nano meter range. Substrate Noise Coupling in RFICs reports silicon measurements, new test and noise isolation structures as well as calibration of a design flow used in the design and debug phases of RFICs. A design guide is articulated to be used by RFIC designers to maximize signal isolation and optimize chip floor plan, power and ground domains. Industrial examples of RFICs are given as demonstration vehicles to validate the proposed techniques. Some emphasis is put on the design of on-chip spiral inductors and the impact of the substrate on their performance. To our knowledge, this is the first title devoted to the topic of substrate noise coupling in RFICs as part of a large SoC.

Nowadays, a significant number of applications require the organization of data elements which contain at least one spatial attribute. Space support in databases poses new challenges in every part of a database management system and the capability of spatial support in the physical layer is considered very important. This has led to the design of spatial access methods to enable the effective and efficient management of spatial objects. R-trees have a simplicity of structure and, together with their resemblance to the B-tree, allow developers to incorporate them easily into existing database management systems for the support of spatial query processing. This book provides an extensive survey of the R-tree evolution, studying the applicability of the structure and its variations to efficient query processing, accurate proposed cost models, and implementation issues like concurrency control and parallelism. Based on the observation that ``space is everywhere", the authors anticipate that we are in the beginning of the era of the ``ubiquitous R-tree" analogous to the way B-trees were considered 25 years ago. Written for database researchers, designers and programmers as well as graduate students, this comprehensive monograph will be a welcome addition to the field. The book successfully integrates research results of the last 20 years, in a clear and highly readable manner. It is the first book dedicated to R-trees and related access methods, and I believe it will be valuable as a reference to everyone interested in the area.
