Abstract

Following the recent dramatic rise in both natural and man-made disasters, humanitarian logistics has received increasing interest from both logistics researchers and practitioners. Provided that logistics operations in the emergency response are effective and efficient, the impact of disasters on affected populations can be drastically reduced. Relief operations involve many different actors operating in complex relationships so as to effectively and efficiently meet the various challenges of preparing for and responding to disasters. In some very recent studies, inter-organizational interactions have emerged among these various actors as an interesting area of development. More research would seem to be required to move from inter-agency coordination to cross-sector cooperation among humanitarian organizations and companies, with a special focus on logistics companies. This book focuses on one specific open question: in logistics and supply chain management, what are the cross-learning opportunities for both the businesses and humanitarian organizations that cooperate in disaster relief through partnership agreements? In terms of the available academic literature and management practice, this subject is still a poorly explored research area, and so the present study is one of the first attempts to thoroughly investigate the issue.

Abstract

Education is a universal priority. Currently, it is at a crossroad. In every society it is valued as a major road to produce more productive, more harmonious and healthier citizens. Yet, in every setting there is deep dissatisfaction with the overall performance of education and there are major moves towards reform, sometimes superficial but more often fundamental. These reform processes have had only moderate and very uneven success. Too often they are episodic, reflecting a short-term approach which is frequently changed for the latest enthusiasm or the most recent administration. In Asia and the Pacific countries many systems are in the process of construction or reconstruction. These issues and concerns are particularly true for secondary education which in many countries has become the weakest link in the education chain. Can we learn from the experiences of others when it comes to the reform of secondary education? Given the multiplicity of efforts at reform, and the variety of situations for reform, there may well be lessons we can learn from each other's efforts and each others failures and successes. This book features contributions from experienced researchers who have worked in many different settings and bring their own insights to attack this universal problem.

Abstract

Racial and ethnic issues stand at the core of social, political, and economic concerns in an increasingly diverse America. Accordingly, how individuals from the various ethnic groups regard themselves and others is a salient focus of research studies across the disciplines. Measuring Race and Ethnicity gathers psychological measures of common phenomena such as racial identity, acculturation, and intra- and intergroup relations enabling researchers to compare concepts across groups and better evaluate differences and disparities. Most of the instruments date from the 1990s and later, while a number of still-useful earlier scales are included. Taken together, these tools strengthen a wide evidence base, and point to areas where new scales are warranted. Included in this volume: -Fourteen measures for African Americans, such as the Rejection Sensitivity Race Questionnaire and the Cultural Mistrust Inventory -Nine Caucasian-specific instruments, including the Race and Politics Survey and the Being White in America Scale -Nineteen acculturation scales for Latinos, some specific to Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Chicanos -Eight Asian/Pacific Islander measures, including the Race-Related Stressor Scale and the Intergenerational Congruence in Immigrant Families Scale. -The Native American Acculturation Scale -Twenty-two generic measures, including the Experience of Discrimination Scale and the Scale of Ethnocultural Empathy Researchers in psychology, social work, and public health examining cultural and race-related topics will find an immediately relevant source of valid and reliable scales in Measuring Race and Ethnicity.

Abstract

As a basic setting for negotiation, the small group can be a crucible of collaboration, or a recipe for hostility. As research interest in small groups has evolved into a salient aspect of social psychology with a robust literature, studies in leadership, power relationships, and teamwork have lent themselves to such diverse concerns as peace studies, diplomacy, and business. Small Group Research: Applications in Conflict Resolution and Peace Psychology is the first book to assemble the published studies of small groups from this perspective and categorize them according to the divisions and subdivisions that make up this rich content area. Carefully documented findings are arranged to provide easy access to general concepts, relevant theories, laboratory and field studies, and core ideas, with implications for peace building and negotiation, in these major domains: Cooperation, competition, and conflict resolution. Coalitions, bargaining, and games. Group dynamics and social cognition. The group, the organization, and the influence of each on the other. Team performance and goal attainment. Intergroup relations, including cognitive and affective consequences. Small Group Research is a unique and timely resource for practitioners, academics, and students in diverse areas such as psychology, counseling, and related fields; peace studies; and business contexts.

Abstract

Beginning in the 1990s, the contentious memory wars divided psychologists into two schools of thought: that adults' recovered memories of childhood abuse were generally true, or that they were generally not, calling theories, therapies, professional ethics, and survivor credibility into question. More recently, findings from cognitive psychology and neuroimaging as well as new theoretical constructs are bringing balance, if not reconciliation, to this polarizing debate. Based on presentations at the 2010 Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, True and False Recovered Memories: Toward a Reconciliation of the Debate assembles an expert panel of scholars, professors, and clinicians to update and expand research and knowledge about the complex interaction of cognitive, emotional, and motivational factors involved in remembering and forgetting severe childhood trauma. Contrasting viewpoints, elaborations on existing ideas, challenges to accepted models, and intriguing experimental data shed light on such issues as the intricacies of identity construction in memory, post-trauma brain development, and the role of suggestive therapeutic techniques in creating false memories. Taken together, these papers add significant new dimensions to a rapidly evolving field. Featured in the coverage: ¢ The cognitive neuroscience of true and false memories. ¢ Toward a cognitive-neurobiological model of motivated forgetting. ¢ The search for repressed memory. ¢ A theoretical framework for understanding recovered memory experiences. ¢ Cognitive underpinnings of recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse. ¢ Motivated forgetting and misremembering: perspectives from betrayal trauma theory. Clinical and cognitive psychologists on all sides of the debate will welcome True and False Recovered Memories as a trustworthy reference, an impartial guide to ongoing controversies, and a springboard for future inquiry.

Abstract

The position of technology education in the school curriculum is a topic of continuous discussions. This book offers a number of research-based contributions to that discussion. A number of aspects have been identified that are related to the way technology education can be embedded in the curriculum: The historical development of the subject, its disciplinary character, its relation to other parts of the curriculum, and in particular with science and language education, the relation between the formal school curriculum and informal learning, forms of progression over the grades, and its contribution to citizenship, forms of literacy and ethics. The final chapter deals with specific issues for developing countries. The book can support decision making on the curriculum and the development of technology education as a part of that by providing theoretical and empirical insights on this topic.

Abstract

Despite an improved analytical knowledge of poverty, a complex multilateral transfer system of official development assistance (ODA), and a list of clearly defined objectives (Millennium Development Goals), poverty reduction in low-income countries remains a great challenge for researchers and practitioners alike. After an era of pessimism, recent empirical studies indicate that foreign aid leads to economic growth under certain conditions, for example a sound policy environment. However, whether or not aid also alleviates poverty is a highly debated issue. Against this background, the book assesses the prospects of ODA for poverty reduction. The author analyzes the entire value chain of ODA, including the provision, allocation and utilization. Within each of these components, scope and limits of aid are critically examined. The horizontal interactions between donors and recipients as well as the vertical connections to local and region-specific conditions represent the heart of this book's approach.

Abstract

Tobacco kills more people worldwide than any legal or illegal drug; the collective benefits of quitting smoking are plentiful, from improved health, increased life expectancy, and fewer sick days to less stress on families and health care providers. Tobacco use and addiction depend on the complex interplay of neurochemical, genetic, personal, and social factors and nicotine, as the principal psychoactive ingredient in tobacco smoke, stands at the center of this equation. The Motivational Impact of Nicotine and Its Role in Tobacco Use assembles papers from the 55th Nebraska Symposium on Motivation in a multidimensional analysis of nicotine at work. These papers present data, theories, and findings useful in understanding not only the mechanisms behind tobacco dependence and resistance to quitting, but also the issues involved in smoking cessation, initial use prevention, and relapse prevention. Some of the key areas covered include: Molecular and neurobiological perspectives on the motivational effects of nicotine. The motivational components of nicotine dependence and the import of learning history. The role of nicotine in making environmental cues associated with smoking more reinforcing. The effects of pharmaco- and immunotherapies on the ability of psychological cues to influence smoking behavior. Sex differences in nicotine reinforcement and their implications for treatment. The importance of craving in the maintenance of smoking behavior and in its relapse after quitting. Given the continued impact of smoking on public health, The Motivational Impact of Nicotine and Its Role in Tobacco Use will attract a wide audience. This cutting-edge information is vital to the clinical psychologist, researcher, and policymaker involved in developing more efficient therapies, more effective treatment products, better delivery systems, or new avenues for research. About the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation The Nebraska Symposium on Motivation has been sponsored by the Department of Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1953. Each year the Symposium invites leading scholars from around the world to speak at a conference devoted to a topic of current interest to psychology, the proceedings of which are published in an edited volume.
