Abstract

The different research fields - gerontology, gender and health - have generated different views, knowledge and foci on ageing, health and gender. It is now necessary to integrate these aspects into research, policy and practice. The objective of this book is to provide an overview of gender, health and ageing. Important theoretical concepts, such as life course and "Lebenslagen" in old age, or differences in men's health, are introduced. It is increasingly important to build a European basis of knowledge, to conduct discussions on European research findings, and to develop European research frameworks. In this volume, central theoretical debates on gender impacts on life course and old-age health, and vital issues of health research in the context of gender and old age are introduced. Specific aspects, such as the impact of gender and age on cardiovascular health, elder abuse and mental health, or care between gender relations, gender roles and gender constructs, are pointed out. Special attention is given to the impact of social, political and economic change in different New EU Member States, like Hungary, Poland and Slovenia.

Abstract

How can information technology (IT) paradigms and design processes be studied from a gender perspective? What does IT design look like when its construction is informed by gender research? Though gender research and computing science seem like two separate worlds, this book proves how inspirational a confrontation and combination of those worlds can be. A deconstructive analysis of advanced fields of computing shows the multiple ways in which software design is gendered and how gendering effects are produced by its use. Concepts and assumptions underlying research and development, along with design tools and IT products, teaching methods and materials are studied. The book not only offers a gender analysis of information society technologies, it also shows practical examples of how IT can be different. A gender perspective on IT design can serve as an eye-opener for what tends to be overlooked and left out. It yields innovative ideas and high quality software systems that may empower a large diversity of users for an active participation in our information society.

Abstract

Implementing the goals of the Bologna declaration means a completely new organization of study programmes, working conditions and the production of knowledge aiming at the harmonization of the European Scientific Area. The new entrepreneurial university is making efforts to increase economic efficiency, transparency and to offer new forms of services in academic teaching and research. More or less vehement debates deal with the question if and to which extent this process will change the original character of academic education and science. Gender research however, is especially interested in the influence of the restructuring process on gender relations. In which way do rationalization and reorganization of the universities and of the universities of applied sciences de/engender academic teaching and research? Where is gender research positioned now? Researchers from European and non European countries will respond to these problems/questions which seem to be unsolved so far.

Abstract

Cornelius Grebe offers an analysis of work-family reconciliation policy in Germany during the Socialdemocrat-Green coalition government of 1998 to 2005. His emphasis lies on Anti-Discrimination Policy, Childcare Policy, Parental Leave Policy, and Working Time Policy. The study combines a social constructionist stance with an alternative feminist standpoint, thus offering a new methodology for political science. Although no ready-made solutions to the incompatibility problem are suggested, its changed representation is analyzed closely, leading to engaging conclusions about how policy might be different if policy-makers understood the problems differently. The study is an entirely original contribution to understanding social policy in Germany and essential reading for researchers and students from the social sciences, in particular sociology and political science.

Abstract

This two-volume work presents social cohesion and demographic challenges that are associated with low birth rates and population ageing. It does so from the perspective of citizens and key policy actors. The work analyses peoples' attitudes about demographic trends and expectations towards private networks and public policies. It places these in the societal context of national specificities in the fourteen countries and regards them as part of the dynamics of the European integration process. Volume 2 focuses on research findings related to general knowledge of people concerning demographic developments, gender issues, and ageing. In addition, it presents the results of a Delphi-Study on the views of key policy actors in the area of demographic developments. The volume concludes with policy implications of the findings, and a reflected overview of all results collected in the two volumes of this work. This book is the outcome of the DIALOG research project, funded by the European Commission under the 5th Framework Programme.

Abstract

The number of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) operations has increased continually over the past decade. To date, roughly one-third of these are performed on women. Despite the tremendous progress made in cardiovascular surgery, not all patients profit equally from it, and the mortality rate of women still exceeds that of men by a factor of two. Studies conducted to investigate this marked gender difference have yielded conflicting results. In particular, adjustment for clinical risk factors seemed to diminish the difference, but could not fully explain it. Therefore psychosocial parameters, in particular depression and psychosocial stress, have gained increasing attention as predictors for both mortality and quality of life after CABG operation. Gender differences in these variables have long been observed in patients undergoing CABG: female patients are on average older, more often depressive and more often living alone than male patients. This book presents the very first German study to focus on these gender differences. By describing the gender-specific influence of psychological and clinical variables on the recovery process, this work fills an important gap in cardiovascular research. Its approach is interdisciplinary in the best sense. The study underlines the importance of psychosocial variables for both mortality and quality of life in the context of CABG. Thus, it may be seen as a basis for a better understanding and treatment of CABG patients.

Abstract

Historical archaeology of landscapes initially followed the pattern of Classical Archaeology by studying elite men's gardens. Over time, particularly in North America, the field has expanded to cover larger settlement areas, but still often with ungendered and elite focus. The editors of this volume seek to fill this important gap in the literature by presenting studies of gendered power dynamics and their effect on minority groups in North America. Case studies presented include communities of Native Americans, African Americans, multi-ethnic groups, religious communities, and industrial communities. Just as the research focus has previously neglected the groups presented here, so too has funding to preserve important archaeological sites. As the contributors to this important volume present a new framework for understanding the archaeology of religious and social minority groups, they also demonstrate the importance of preserving the cultural landscapes, particularly of minority groups, from destruction by the modern dominant culture. A full and complete picture of cultural preservation has to include all of the groups that interacted form it. Abstract

Bron: https://hetboekenrijk.com/2023/05/10/prinses-luka-ineke-debels-katrien-benaets/
