De invoering van de nieuwe Zorgverzekeringswet in 2006 betekende een drastische wijziging van het zorgstelsel in Nederland. Twee jaar later kan worden gesteld dat deze operatie geen grote problemen heeft opgeleverd. De betaalbaarheid van de zorg is gehandhaafd en tegelijkertijd is de toegankelijkheid van de zorg voor eenieder gewaarborgd. Inmiddels is de regelgeving op een aantal punten aangepast. Deze tweede, herziene druk van De Zorgverzekeringswet en de Wet op de zorgtoeslag biedt een geheel geactualiseerd overzicht van de wordingsgeschiedenis, het juridische instrumentarium en het juridisch kader van de Zorgverzekeringswet. De meest ingrijpende amendementen van de zorgverzekeringswet en de Wet op de zorgtoeslag worden besproken. Daarnaast komen alle actuele wijzigingen en aanvullingen in de regelgeving aan bod en wordt uitvoerig ingegaan op aanverwante wetgeving, zoals de Wet marktordening gezondheidszorg, de Wet op het financieel toezicht en de Wet maatschappelijke ondersteuning.

If it comes to choosing between methods of last resort for severely suffering, physician-assisted suicide will probably prove more acceptable as a method of last resort than active euthanasia both to patients, to legislators and to the general public. From the perspective of patients, physician-assisted suicide is a more unambiguous expression of the patient's autonomous will. From the legislator's perspective it seems less liable to misuse and abuse. And often the availability of assisted suicide, instead of shortening the life of a patient, has proved to prolong it. Public policy has begun to respond to this prospect. Notably in Switzerland and Germany, the attitudes of public bodies towards physician-assisted suicide are in a process of change, partly motivated by the wish to take the edge off the pressure for legalisation of active euthanasia. The present volume focuses on public policy issues related to physician-assisted suicide. It offers a detailed analysis of the current legal standing and practice of physician-assisted suicide in various countries and discusses the ethical principles underlying its legal and professional regulation. In addition, it contains a number of personal narratives by professionals who have for many years been involved in end-of-life issues.

The book analyzes attitudes to people with various disabilities based on Muslim jurists' works (fiqh) in the Middle Ages and the modern era. In the Islamic legal literature people with disabilities are mentioned sporadically, and often within broad topics such as religious duties, jihad, marriage, etc., but seldom as a subject by its own right. Very little has been written so far on people with disabilities in a general Islamic context, much less in reference to Islamic law. This is the innovation of the book.
