Abstract

Over the last four decades the sociological life course approach with its focus on the interplay of structure and agency over time life course perspective has become an important research perspective in the social sciences. Yet, while it has successfully been applied to almost all fields of social inquiry it is much less used in research studying migrant populations and their integration patterns. This is puzzling since understanding immigrants' integration requires just the kind of dynamic research approach this approach puts forward: any integration theory actually refers to life course processes. This volume shows fruitful cross-linkages between the two research traditions. A range of studies are presented that all apply sociological life course concepts to research on migrants and migrant groups in Europe. The book is organized thematically, indicating different important domains in the life course. Using a wide variety of methodological approaches, it covers both quantitative studies based on population census data and survey material as well as qualitative studies based on interviews. Attention is paid to the life courses of those who migrated themselves as well as their offspring. The studies cover different European countries, relating to one national context or a particular local setting in a city as well as cross-country comparisons. Overall the book shows that applying the sociological life course approach to migration and integration research may advance our understanding of immigrant settlement patterns as well as further develop the life course perspective

Abstract

Migration, Health and Inequality highlights recent developments in the areas of migration, human rights and health from a range of countries. Looking at diverse health issues, from HIV to reproductive and maternal health, and a variety of forms of migration, including asylum-seeking, labour migration and trafficking, it offers a range of linkages between migrant agency, transnationalism and diaspora mechanisms and looks at the impact of migrant health on those communities that are left behind.

Abstract

An increasing number of landings of illegal migrants on the coast of Italy and Spain, but also the recent riots, car-burnings, and street battles that occurred all across France and that have been attributed to the migrant community, seem to indicate that migration is likely to stay high on the European policy agenda for some time. The flow of migrants from poor to rich countries does not, however, constitute a typically European problem. V. S. public policy has also been facing a continued (legal and illegal) inflow of labor from different regions, notably Mexico and other Latin American countries. And similar developments in other advanced countries (Australia, Canada) as weil as in selected fast-growing emerging markets in Eastern Europe and East Asia imply that these countries too are being compelled to adjust their public policies in order to relieve migratory pressures and deal with their consequences. The world economy already saw rising cross-border labor flows in the 1990s and most forecasts predict that South-North and South-South migration will re main at relatively high levels over the next decades and possibly even turn into a major global challenge for policy makers in the 21st century.

Abstract

This book is mainly concerned with economic analysis of the labour market status of NESB (Non-English Speaking Background) migrant women in Australia. Newly developed and sophisticated econometric methods are used to analyse the labour market status of both NESB migrant and Australian born women. It shows that NESB migrant women are over represented in occupations that have low pay and poor working conditions. It also shows that they are disadvantaged (and discriminated against) in the Australian labour market due to poor English, non-recognition of overseas qualifications and their late arrival. Our analysis provides many new results, which were not observed previously. This book sheds light on why labour market outcomes appear to be unequal, and what policy measures might be undertaken to reduce the imbalance. Some of the techniques presented here can also be used in a wide range of policy areas in many other countries. Economists, policy and business analysts and market researchers will find this book very useful.

Abstract

Population Mobility and Infectious Disease Edited by Yorghos Apostolopoulos, Emory University School of Medicine, USA Sevil Sonmez, Cyprus College, Cyprus Population Mobility and Infectious Disease moves beyond traditional behavioral and demographic theories of disease diffusion to focus on larger issues of social ecology and public health. With depth rarely seen in the international literature, it explores the complex and varied roles of mobile, transient, and displaced populations in the worldwide spread of airborne, waterborne, and sexually transmitted infections. The book argues that while biomedical events cause disease, social forces such as poverty and marginalization magnify them by giving them new opportunities to take hold. Population mobility either voluntary or forced brings contact between populations with different disease prevalence rates; outbreaks in turn are compounded by inequalities in access to medical care. From Katrina to Darfur, and from influenza to AIDS, an expert panel of health and social scientists bring the socioeconomic context of epidemics into clear focus. -Historical perspectives on migration, development, and epidemics -Social resources and health barriers among migrant groups -The role of mobile labor populations (e.g., migrant workers, truckers, the military) in disease transmission -War, refugees, resettlement: health effects on the world scale -Natural disasters and climate change: their local and global disease impact -Leisure travel and health risks, from spring-break binges to commercial sex tourism -Methodological and design issues confronting researchers -The politics of prevention: ethical concerns in migration-related illness The unique scope of this book makes it as timely as the next health crisis and relevant to a gamut of interrelated fields, including public and international health, epidemiology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, human rights, and development and planning. By expanding concepts, examining trends, and pinpointing areas for intervention, it is a critical resource for the academic, research, practice, and policy sectors.
