Abstract

The?rsttwovolumesinthisTemplatesinChemistry serieshavefocused on templates that controlsolution-phase reactions. Among the templates d- cussed in these two volumes were convex and concave templates that mediate the formation of (macro)cyclic molecules and mechanically bound molecules withtheir intriguingintertwined topology.Also,three-dimensional templates that are used to imprint polymers and that organize compounds in the solid state for predestined reactions have been included in the earlier volumes. In the present volume, we extend thetemplate topologytosurfaces that act asmatricesforthecontrolledgrowthoftwo-dimensionalarrays.Naturally,the typical methods for the characterization of surfaces such as scanning probe microscopyare prominently represented in this volume. Differentlateralinteractionssuchascoordinativebondsorhydrogenbo- ing play a major role in assembling the 2D networks on surfaces in addition to the interaction of the samples with the underlying substrates. Many p- nomena that are also encountered in solution can be directly visualized on surfaces: Reversible self-assembly processes lead to the formation of large structures through multiple recognition of small building blocks and cul- nate in the engineering of crystals in two dimensions. Self-sorting processes drive the formation of highly ordered arrays through the geometric ?t of the available components. Either the surface itself is the template, for example, when clusters grow on metal oxide ?lms, or colloidal templates control the formationof macroporousnetworksonthe substrate. This volume highlightsa selection of actual complementary aspects of s- facetemplates.Webelievethatthescopeandthevarietyoftopicscoveredinthis volume will attract readers fromdifferent communities such as supramole- larchemistry, materialsciences, surfacechemistry, surfacephysicsandsurface technologyandwehopetheywillenjoythisnewvolumeonTemplatesinCh- istry.

Abstract

The volumes of this classic series, now referred to simply as "Zechmeister" after its founder, L. Zechmeister, have appeared under the Springer Imprint ever since the series' inauguration in 1938. The volumes contain contributions on various topics related to the origin, distribution, chemistry, synthesis, biochemistry, function or use of various classes of naturally occurring substances ranging from small molecules to biopolymers. Each contribution is written by a recognized authority in his field and provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the topic in question. Addressed to biologists, technologists, and chemists alike, the series can be used by the expert as a source of information and literature citations and by the non-expert as a means of orientation in a rapidly developing discipline.

Abstract

This fourth edition of the highly successful and concise textbook contains about 20 % new data. Now included are chapters on 19F and 31P NMR as well as references to important Raman bands. With their unique approach of presenting - in the form of texts, tables, charts, and graphs - a succinct compilation of essential reference data for the interpretation of NMR, IR, UV/Vis, and mass spectra, the authors also provide a hands-on guide for interpreting experimental spectral data and elucidating the structure of the respective compounds behind them. Besides spectra of common solvents, calibration reagents, and MALDI and FAB MS matrix materials, fragmentation rules for mass spectrometry and UV/Vis spectra of representative compounds are included. The book will benefit students during courses and exercises, and advanced learners may use it to supplement their understanding of extended textbooks on the topic. While only a basic knowledge of spectroscopic techniques is required to use this book, it will serve as a data reference for specialists in the field and will support practitioners routinely faced with the task of interpreting spectral information. From a review of the previous edition: "Practically all teachers in spectroscopy and countless students know these books and work continuously with them." Abstract

A great deal of misinformation is present in popular culture regarding the effects of creatine supplementation on health and sports performance. For instance, it is not uncommon for various media outlets to claim, in spite of the lack of supporting evidence, that 'supplementing with creatine is harmful to the liver and kidneys and may cause dehydration and cramping.' In reality, creatine is intimately involved in energy metabolism, performance, and training adaptations, and, recently, several studies have uncovered its potential clinical application toward treating various neuromuscular diseases and maintaining brain function. This book unifies the sum of information on how creatine affects body composition, exercise performance, and health. Because the body of data on creatine is ample and constantly growing, a book such as this is a timely and important resource for the clinician, the coach, and the sports scientist.

Abstract

Continuous rigorous research in basic neurosciences and in clinical studies has enormously increased our knowledge of the neurobiological basis of mental functions and of the neuronal dysfunctions underlying such diseases as schizophrenia, depression, attention deficit disorder, and Parkinson's disease. A transmitter system does not work in isolation, it interacts with other transmitters and the balance between several transmitter determines the outcome, either physiological or pathological. Such a critical balance exists between dopamine and glutamate, which in many brain areas play functionally opposing roles. In Dopamine and Glutamate in Psychiatric Disorders, a panel of neurochemists, pharmacologists, experimental psychologists, and clinicians summarizes our current understanding of the interactive role of dopamine and glutamate in psychiatric diseases and from that develops novel therapeutic strategies and possibilities for the future. Among the new ideas presented are hypotheses on the role of dopamine and glutamate in aggression, the glutamate system in anxiety disorders, glutamate and neurodegeneration, on the origin, progression, and cognitive aspects of Parkinson's disease. Additional chapters offer illuminating insights into a variety of psychiatric diseases, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, stress, aggression, addiction, schizophrenia, depression, social phobias, dementias, bulimia, and neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Each chapter summarizes the prevalence and symptoms of the disease and explains the involvement of dopamine and/or glutamate systems using the newer molecular approaches such as transgenic knockout or knockin mice and recent brain imaging techniques. The authors also offer a critical selection and evaluation of relevant literature and a description of future directions for new therapy development. Path-breaking and insightful, Dopamine and Glutamate in Psychiatric Disorders offers behavioral pharmacologists, neurobiologists, and clinicians an enlightening review of the neurobiological basis and treatment strategies of today's most important psychiatric and neurological diseases.
