Abstract

Abstract

Colorectal surgery is a rapidly-evolving surgical field. Innovative procedures, including advanced endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery, are allowing surgeons to offer patients ever-improving treatment options and better surgical outcomes than ever before. Since the last edition of the full volume of Chassin’s Operative Strategies in General Surgery, laparoscopic colon surgery has become the new standard of care in many surgical centers. Thus, for Chassin’s Operative Strategies in Colon and Rectal Surgery, we have added four new, previously unpublished chapters to this new volume: laparoscopic right hemicolectomy and laparoscopic left hemicolectomy; laparoscopic stoma construction and closure; laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection; and total proctocolectomy with end ileostomy. These new chapters provide the reader with the latest techniques in colorectal surgery. In addition to the clear, comprehensive text, these new chapters are enhanced by 52 lavish new illustrations. While the text provides the reader a with clear, step-by-step instructions, the illustrations provide the visual orientation so important to every surgeon's pre-operative preparations. .

Abstract

MRI has become an important tool in the management of patients with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, such as rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases. This book, written by distinguished experts in the field, discusses in detail the technical, practical, and clinical aspects of MRI of the gastrointestinal tract. The chapters on technique encompass the most recent developments and address such topics as contrast media, high field strength MRI, and perfusion MRI. Subsequently, individual chapters are devoted to the clinical applications of MRI in the different parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Both established applications and new frontiers are considered, with the aid of numerous high-quality illustrations. By combining chapters dedicated to technical aspects and clinically oriented chapters, this book will prove very instructive for the novice while simultaneously offering experienced practitioners further insights into the value of MRI of the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract

The translation of new molecular understanding of disease into clinical practice in gastroenterology is a special challenge. The Falk Symposium No. 160, entitled ‘Pathogenesis and Clinical Practice in Gastroenterology’, held 15-16 June 2007 in Portorož, Slovenia, provided a stimulating framework to bridge discussions from bench to bedside. The proceedings of the symposium are contained in this book, and the unifying theme is the growing understanding of inflammation as a driving force in chronic disease leading to disability and malignancy. Aspects of early detection - endoscopically or via molecular markers - are covered as well as in-depth discussions of the validation of new findings in clinical practice. Whilst on a molecular basis gastroenterologists and hepatologists try to shed light on the same intracellular pathways, clinical implications such as surveillance of cancer in IBD or chronic hepatitis with cirrhosis have to be tailored to specific needs. New therapeutic agents - approved or on the horizon of early clinical studies - will dramatically change the options of patients with chronic disease such as Crohn’s disease, viral hepatitis or hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract

Although the sensory organs-particularly the eye and ear-are of great clinical importance, the lecture time allocated to them in the anatomical curricula is limited because of their great nomenclatural and physiological complexity. Sufficiently detailed descriptions can usually be found only in multivolume handbooks or in specialist monographs covering a single sensory organ. In Atlas of the Sensory Organs: Functional and Clinical Anatomy, a panel of expert medical educators and internationally renowned comparative and developmental neuroanatomists concisely, but thoroughly, describe the five main human sensory systems together with their neural pathways, from primary sensation to processing by the brain. The authors provide a detailed anatomical survey of each sensory organ, covering their ontogeny (development), central pathways, and functional mechanisms. The organs themselves are richly illustrated with light and electron microscopic representations of healthy and intact organs or tissues, except where pathology is directly relevant to understanding normal structure and function. Highlights include microanatomy and endoscopic images of the temporal bone, human embryonic specimens demonstrating the histology of the developing ear, and scanning electron micrographs of the organ of Corti and the vestibular receptors. There are also easy-to-use tables providing an overview of the nerves and arteries of the eye and orbit, and clinical specimens of the eye and optic pathways. A companion compact disk contains high-resolution copies of the color illustrations used in the book. Comprehensive and richly illustrated, Atlas of the Sensory Organs: Functional and Clinical Anatomy provides a detailed portrait of all the sensory organs and related neural systems in a single volume replete with high-quality illustrations of original specimens, recordings, and numerous schematic drawings.
