The most outstanding feature of "Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics" is the demonstration of the practicality of biomechanics, when applied to lower limb prosthetics. Several original concepts are described, one of which, "rolling technology," has been implemented in prosthetic devices, while the principle of "reciprocal anti-resonance in locomotion" addresses future studies. A concept of anthropomorphicity presented by the author is a key tool in planning the design of an artificial limb or its components. Measurement procedures and equipment used in biomechanical laboratories are presented. The book demonstrates how the analysis of biomechanical data is a tool in the decision-making process of a prosthetic designer and clinician. The author shares his experience in the development of a protocol for biomechanics subject trials used in NIH-supported studies.

This book is a comprehensive reference and practical guide on the technology and application of ultrasound to the musculoskeletal system. It is organized into two main sections. The first is devoted to general aspects, while the second provides a systematic overview of the applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound in different areas of the body. Additional sections address instrumentation, interventional procedures, and pediatric applications. Each chapter of the second main section provides an introduction on clinical anatomy and the essentials of clinical history and physical examination. Thereafter, performance of the ultrasound study is explained and the normal and pathological anatomy is reviewed. To assist in understanding, the ultrasound scans are correlated with drawings, photographs, images obtained using other modalities, and anatomic specimens. There is a generous complement of high-quality illustrations based on high-end equipment. This book will acquaint beginners with the basics of musculoskeletal ultrasound, while more advanced sonologists and sonographers will learn new skills, means of avoiding pitfalls, and ways of effectively relating the ultrasound study to the clinical background.

Cartilage Repair Strategies is a comprehensive update of the present state of cartilage repair and regeneration. The information in this volume addresses what methods are effective, what methods are safe, and what methods will lead to an alteration in the short history of articular cartilage injury repair. Contributors present examinations of a variety of topics including the structure and function of articular cartilage, the evaluation of cartilage repair techniques, and the latest cartilage sensitive imaging techniques. Several chapters anticipate new and emerging cartilage repair techniques – such as second generation ACI, resorbable scaffold-based repair, and arthroscopically performed cartilage transplantation – and include descriptions of the rationale and application of these procedures. Leading experts present updates on current and emerging methodologies, making Cartilage Repair Strategies a unique and essential reference.

Reeducation consists in training people injured either by illness or the vagaries of life to achieve the best functionality now possible for them. Strangely, the subject is not taught in the normal educational curricula of the relevant professions. Reeducation thus tends to be developed anew with each patient, without recourse to knowledge of what such training, or assistance in such training, might be. However, new paradigms of reeducation are in fact possible today, thanks to advances in cognitive science and the development of new technologies such as virtual reality and robotics. In turn, they lead to the rethinking of the procedures of physical medicine, as well as of reeducation. The present book addresses primarily those professionals involved in reeducation: the clinician, kinestherapist, ergotherapist, speech therapist, psychometrician, clinical psychologist, and neuropsychologist. More generally, it addresses also those in occupations in physical rehabilitation and in both primary and ongoing education. The first part looks anew at reeducation in the context of both international classifications of functionality, handicap, and health and the concept of normality. The second part highlights the function of implicit memory in reeducation. And the last part, illustrated by practical examples, shows the integration of new cognition technologies in the new paradigms of reeducation. By its combination of theoretical approach and practical application, the work offers new therapeutic routes toward a better and more integrated functionality for the patient.

A great deal of misinformation is present in popular culture regarding the effects of creatine supplementation on health and sports performance. For instance, it is not uncommon for various media outlets to claim, in spite of the lack of supporting evidence, that 'supplementing with creatine is harmful to the liver and kidneys and may cause dehydration and cramping.' In reality, creatine is intimately involved in energy metabolism, performance, and training adaptations, and, recently, several studies have uncovered its potential clinical application toward treating various neuromuscular diseases and maintaining brain function. This book unifies the sum of information on how creatine affects body composition, exercise performance, and health. Because the body of data on creatine is ample and constantly growing, a book such as this is a timely and important resource for the clinician, the coach, and the sports scientist.
