De 'tweede man' van de Beweging van Tachtig, de dichter Albert Verwey, was zoveel meer dan een dichter. Bij zijn dood werd hij bijvoorbeeld gekenschetst als 'het Nationaal Geweten' van Nederland. Cultuurhistoricus Madelon de Keizer verdiepte zich in Verweys unieke en zeer omvangrijke archief en las de duizenden brieven die hij met beroemde tijdgenoten in binnen- en buitenland wisselde. 'Als een meeuw op de golven' beschrijft zijn veelomvattende leven en werk aan de hand van zijn liefde voor zijn vrouw Kitty en zijn vriendschap met de schilder Jan Veth, zijn hartsvriend en latere vijand Willem Kloos, zijn moeizame relatie met Lodewijk van Deyssel, zijn beroemde Duitse dichtersvriend Stefan George, zijn 'pupil' P.N. van Eyck en zijn bewonderaar Maurits Uyldert. Uit deze eerste moderne biografie komt een begaafd dichter en criticus naar voren in een Nederland waarin grote veranderingen op technisch, politiek en cultureel vlak gaande waren. Net als Huizinga in de jaren dertig en Bas Heijne in het Nederland van nu was Verwey een geëngageerd intellectueel. En zijn wereld lijkt verrassend veel op de onze.

Jay Winter's powerful study of the 'collective remembrance' of the Great War offers a major reassessment of one of the critical episodes in the cultural history of the twentieth century. Dr Winter looks anew at the culture of commemoration and the ways in which communities endeavoured to find collective solace after 1918. Taking issue with the prevailing 'modernist' interpretation of the European reaction to the appalling events of 1914-18, Dr Winter instead argues that what characterised that reaction was, rather, the attempt to interpret the Great War within traditional frames of reference. Tensions arose inevitably.
