De nouveaux chantiers s’ouvrent aujourd’hui pour une histoire revisitée des rapports entre femmes et catholicisme avec la perspective du genre. Dans le cadre d’une journée d’études, il n’était pas possible de baliser tous les chemins à emprunter. Quatre seulement ont été retenus : le politique, la spiritualité, le genre et le féminisme. Un cinquième a été joint dans cette publication avec un point de vue décentré sur la « mission au féminin », celui d’une historienne américaine et d’une historienne chilienne. Cet ouvrage a donc pour but de croiser les approches historiographiques, en faisant appel à des spécialistes d’horizons différents, venus de l’histoire religieuse, de l’histoire sociale, de l’histoire des femmes et du genre mais également d’autres disciplines comme la sociologie. Il est aussi le fruit d’une collaboration étroite entre deux équipes de recherches au sein du LARHRA : « Genre et Sociétés » (Pascale Barthélémy) et « Pouvoirs, Villes et Sociétés » (Bruno Dumons). L’histoire du catholicisme est devenue à ce jour un objet d’études à part entière, délesté de l’histoire de l’Église de tradition apologétique, qui peut désormais s’approprier les nouvelles recherches menées sur les femmes et le genre. En retenant quelques-unes d’entre elles à partir de l’exemple français, cette publication constitue aussi un appel à confronter la réflexion avec d’autres historiographies nationales mais aussi bien au-delà de celles qui caractérisent l’espace européen.

75 jaar geleden werd de Socialistische Vooruitziende Vrouwen (SVV) opgericht met het doel voor vrouwen een volwaardige plaats in de maatschappij te veroveren. In dit boek wordt in verschillende wetenschappelijke bijdragen de historiek van SVV onderzocht aan de hand van klassiek geworden thema's in de vrouwengeschiedenis en tegen de achtergrond van haar relatie tot andere takken van de socialistische beweging, de partij en de vakbond. De weg van de SVV loopt over die van tweederangsburgers naar de strijd voor gelijke kansen, van moederschapsverzekering naar sociale zekerheid en van bewust moederschap naar legalisering van abortus. Deze evolutie wordt kritisch bekeken in het licht van het debat over gender en vrouwenidentiteit, waardoor dit boek het kader van de socialistische vrouwenbeweging overschrijdt. We krijgen een beeld van hoe de positie van alle Belgische vrouwen in de twintigste eeuw veranderde en verbeterde.

L’ensemble des articles composant cet ouvrage concerne l’idéologie et la mythologie de la femme au xixe siècle. La première partie résulte des travaux, à la fois personnels et collectifs, du Centre d’Études « Littérature et idéologies au xixe siècle » de l’Université de Lyon II, qui s’est intéressé plus particulièrement à l’idéologie de la femme dans l’histoire écrite, dans la littérature et dans le journalisme ; la seconde partie est liée à l’enseignement donné en Licence à l’Université de Lyon II : elle retrouve les mêmes thèmes, mais transmués dans l’ordre du discours romanesque balzacien (La Fille aux yeux d’or).

Elleke Boehmer's work on the crucial intersections between independence, nationalism and gender has already proved canonical in the field. 'Stories of women' combines her keynote essays on the mother figure and the postcolonial nation, with incisive new work on male autobiography, 'daughter' writers, the colonial body, the trauma of the post-colony, and the nation in a transnational context. Focusing on Africa as well as South Asia, and sexuality as well as gender, Boehmer offers fine close readings of writers ranging from Achebe, Okri and Mandela to Arundhati Roy and Yvonne Vera, shaping these into a critical engagement with theorists of the nation such as Fredric Jameson and Partha Chatterjee. Moving beyond cynical deconstructions of the post-colony, the book mounts a reassessment of the post-colonial nation as a site of potential empowerment, as a ‘paradoxical refuge’ in a globalised world. It acts on its own impassioned argument that post-colonial and nation-state studies address substantively issues hitherto raised chiefly within international feminism.
