The way we conceive the human today is particularly affected by the shifts in media technology during the 20th century. Affect emerges as the new liminal concept that renders the body compatible in novel ways with the technology and politics of media. By ways of a relational reorganization the organic end technological life is condensed in a new, intense way to an ecology of affects.

Este volumen examina la hasta hoy poco tratada imbricación entre la emoción y el desplazamiento de los hispanos por el mundo en función de los contextos socio-políticos y los momentos vitales de los concernidos. Reúne aportaciones en español y en inglés de un variado espectro de disciplinas -desde los estudios literarios, culturales y de género, hasta la antropología y la sociología- que analizan esta imbricación, sus funciones y modalidades en base a un entendimiento amplio del concepto de emotive de William Reddy. Así, este libro recoge una gran gama de medios -como la literatura, el cine, las páginas web, los vlogs y las entrevistas- en los que los hispanos expresan sus emociones respecto a sus viajes o experiencias migratorias, pero también a los efectos a largo plazo de desplazamientos históricos en sujetos que se sienten desplazados o fuera de lugar en el presente. De este modo, Hispanos en el mundo aborda un tema de gran actualidad y relevancia y, además, cubre un vacío investigativo, no solo en los estudios de la migración -con la excepción de algunos trabajos que suelen centrarse en el ámbito de lo familiar y de los cuidados-, sino también en el hispanismo, donde se erige como estudio pionero. The essays, written in Spanish and English and departing from various perspectives and disciplines, analyze different media in which Spanish-speaking individuals express their feelings about their travels, their personal experience with migration, and the repercussions of historic migration movements. It has become clear that the two halves of the cortex differ in their contributions to both affective and memory processes. Still, the exact nature of the interrelationships among hemispheric function, emotion, and memory remains elusive. For example, controversy remains regarding differential hemispheric involvement in emotion, motivation, and affective style. Regarding memory, although evidence suggests differences in the manner in which the hemispheres interact may be related to memory retrieval, it is still not certain which factors involved in retrieval encourage or inhibit hemispheric communication. This Special Topics seeks manuscripts that help to clarify the involvement of hemispheric laterality in affective and memory processes. Possible topics might include the differential contributions of the hemispheres to each of these processes, the benefits of increased or decreased hemispheric activity during such processes, factors that influence increased or decreased memory processes reflected in hemispheric activity, and the interrelationship between memory and emotion, as mediated by the cerebral hemispheres.

La neutralité, en science comme ailleurs, est un vœu pieux, voire un leurre, à mieux comprendre, si ce n’est évaluer ou contrôler. Surtout, l’engagement sur un terrain d’études conduit à des surprises, voire à des déconvenues qui font le sel des ouvrages de N. Barley comme par exemple L’anthropologue en déroute (2001). Dans le cadre des approches sensibles en sciences humaines et sociales, les émotions ressenties par le corps, recueillies et partagées, avec plaisir ou déplaisir, ne sont plus considérées comme des perturbateurs de l’analyse mais comme des sésames d’accès à la compréhension humaine. Elles s’imposent à la chercheuse ou au chercheur, la/le surprennent ; elles deviennent des guides utiles, des opératrices d’inclinaisons, voire de bifurcations, dans la recherche scientifique. Longtemps délaissées, les émotions ne constituent plus un obstacle à la rationalité mais un échafaudage à l’avènement d’une orientation théorique spécifique plutôt qu’une autre, à une modification d’attitude sur le terrain, etc. Émotion et cognition sont, pour le pire et le meilleur, définitivement intriquées.

This is a collection of heterogeneous essays referred to literature from diverse periods and nationalities. They were put together for the main purpose of illustrating a variety of possibilities regarding a kind of literary analysis based on the hermeneutical power of affect and emotions in art. The volume is divided into two major sections. The first one contains essays on novels where female protagonists play a central role, whereas the second consists of studies exploring other types of narrative devices, also concerned with the construction of emotions, taken as powerful vehicles of meaning in the readings there proposed.
