The study of slavery and coerced labour is increasingly conducted from a global perspective, and yet a dual Eurocentric bias remains: slavery primarily brings to mind the images of Atlantic chattel slavery, and most studies continue to be based - either outright or implicitly - on a model of northern European wage labour. This book constitutes an attempt to re-centre that story to Asia. With studies spanning the western Indian Ocean and the steppes of Central Asia to the islands of South East Asia and Japan, and ranging from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, this book tracks coercion in diverse forms, tracing both similarities and differences - as well as connections - between systems of coercion, from early sales regulations to post-abolition labour contracts. Deep empirical case studies, as well as comparisons between the chapters, all show that while coercion was entrenched in a number of societies, it was so in different and shifting ways. This book thus not only shows the history of slavery and coercion in Asia as a connected story, but also lays the groundwork for global studies of a phenomenon as varying, manifold and contested as coercion.

Au titre de la corvée royale, dite aussi des grands chemins, les habitants de nombreuses communautés riveraines d'un axe routier furent contraints pendant la majeure partie du xviiie siècle de fournir quelques jours de travail pour sa construction ou son entretien. Décrié comme arbitraire, oppressif et inefficient, ce système de réquisition œuvra puissamment à l'extension du réseau routier et indirectement à l'essor des mobilités et des circulations marchandes. C'est ce paradoxe que cherche à comprendre ce livre en se dégageant d'une représentation critique de la corvée, largement construite par le discours libéral des Lumières qui en fit une institution fondamentalement incompatible avec ses idéaux et la croissance économique. Or la décision de recourir à la corvée en travail et les modalités de son fonctionnement présentent une certaine rationalité dans le contexte dans lequel elle s'inscrit. Cette institution va se trouver travaillée dans la seconde moitié du xviiie siècle par des dynamiques sociales et économiques elles-mêmes fortement marquées par des différenciations spatiales. La transition entre une prestation en nature attachée à un statut fiscal et un impôt destiné à financer du travail salarié constitue alors plus largement un observatoire de l'action politique, de dynamiques économiques et de représentations sociales.

For the first time, this book provides the global history of labor in Central Eurasia, Russia, Europe, and the Indian Ocean between the sixteenth and the twentieth centuries. Coffee has been grown on Java for the commercial market since the early eighteenth century, when the Dutch East India Company began buying from peasant producers in the Priangan highlands. What began as a commercial transaction, however, soon became a system of compulsory production. This book shows how the Dutch East India Company mobilized land and labor, why they turned to force cultivation, and what effects the brutal system they installed had on the economy and society.

This is a translation of one of very few Russian serfs' memoirs. Savva Purlevskii recollects his life in Russian serfdom and life of his grandparents, parents, and fellow villagers. He describes family and communal life and the serfs' daily interaction with landlords and authorities. Purlevskii came from an initially prosperous family that later became impoverished. Early in his childhood, he lost his father. Purlevskii did not have a chance to gain a formal education. He lived under serfdom until 1831 when at the age of 30 he escaped his servitude.Gorshkov's introduction provides some basic knowledge about Russian serfdom and draws upon the most recent scholarship. Notes provide references and general information about events, places and people mentioned in the memoirs.
