En cette fin de siècle où la médecine, à la fois accomplit des progrès décisifs et se heurte aux dures réalités de la crise de la protection sociale, tandis que se déploie inexorablement une grande épidémie qui rappelle les peurs d'autrefois, le moment était sans doute venu de mesurer l'évolution accomplie par la recherche en histoire de la médecine durant ces dernières années. Mais aussi, à l'heure de la réforme des formations universitaires, de s'interroger sur le rôle, en France, de cette discipline dans la formation des futurs praticiens. Le 9 janvier 1993, le Groupe de recherche en épistémologie et histoire de la médecine organisait à Paris une journée dédiée au souvenir de Jacques Léonard. L'objectif de cette journée était double. D'abord rendre hommage à un chercheur réputé et à un enseignant de talent, trop tôt enlevé, en pleine activité, tant à l'histoire française des sciences qu'à ses étudiants et ses collègues. Il s'agissait ensuite de répondre à la question : où va l'histoire de la médecine ? Discipline à laquelle Jacques Léonard a apporté une contribution si essentielle. Pour l'histoire de la médecine se veut donc un premier bilan des travaux accomplis, mais aussi une réflexion prospective sur les chantiers ouverts.

Das vorliegende Buch bietet die erste systematische Untersuchung zum Thema Alterssuizid in der griechisch-römischen Antike. Der Autor zeigt, daß bereits im Altertum das hohe Alter, der nahende Tod, Altersleiden und der erwogene oder vollzogene Freitod ein kohärentes, dem zeitgenössischen Denken und Erleben vertrautes Motivgeflecht bildeten. Trotz einer dürftigen Quellenlage läßt sich plausibel annehmen, daß der wegen Krankheiten, Einsamkeit und Lebensüberdruß ins Auge gefaßte oder begangene Suizid im höheren Lebensalter weit größere Bedeutung besaß, als angesichts der spärlichen Informationen zu vermuten wäre. Nachweislich existierten bereits umfängliche und detaillierte geriatrische Kenntnisse, darunter auch empirisch fundiertes Wissen um den Alterssuizid. Und schließlich haben sich auch bereits die antiken Ärzte mit dem Problem erwünschter – passiver oder aktiver – Sterbehilfe auseinandersetzen müssen.

The biography and the works of Ferdinando Zannetti, physician, surgeon, politician and outstanding figure in nineteenth-century Tuscany acquire new light through the organisation and inventorying of the papers from his archive. The history of medicine and surgery of this period is enriched by new data, making it possible to enter into the daily exercise of the profession. The evidence of Zannetti as a military doctor and organiser of the health service during the wars of independence also offers a fascinating new slant on the history of the Risorgimento. The political life of Florence and Tuscany are relived in the framework of the laborious construction of the new State.

Une source inconnue indique : "Medicine on the Margins explores the ways in which Tibetan medical doctors have preserved and revitalized aspects of Tibetan medicine over the past fifty years. During decades of forced sociopolitical and economic upheaval in Tsang Province of China's Tibetan Autonomous Region--with medical texts destroyed or hidden, teachers and lamas imprisoned or otherwise silenced, and almost all trade in medicinal ingredients halted--they had little hope that their 'science of healing' (Sowa Rigpa) would again flourish. Today, however, Tibetan medicine is in vogue, promoted by the Chinese Communist Party as a pillar industry of Tibet and a valuable asset of Tibetans' 'nationality minority culture.' For urban Tibetans, traditional medicine is one of the few areas where a relatively liberal expression of Tibetan identity and language is possible. In urban, medically pluralistic settings it is an easily available resource, while in remote areas, its practice and transmission to the younger generation faces many challenges. The passing away of the last practitioner of a certain pulse-reading or compounding of an herbal formula, for example, could mean the end of a long chain of transmission. For reasons of lack of access, continued repression of nonofficial histories, fear, and loss of living memory, Tibetan medical doctors--the so-called amchi--have been little studied. This volume presents their story, showing how practitioners from Tsang have retained crucial links in the teaching of medical knowledge despite the near-annihilation of monastic Buddhism and 'medical houses."
