Abstract

There are not many books about how people get younger. It doesn't happen very often. But Ageing with Smartphones in Ireland documents a radical change in the experience of ageing.Based on two ethnographies, one within Dublin and the other from the Dublin region, the book shows that people, rather than seeing themselves as old, focus on crafting a new life in retirement. Our research participants apply new ideals of sustainability both to themselves and to their environment. They go for long walks, play bridge, do yoga and keep as healthy as possible. As part of Ireland's mainstream middle class, they may have more time than the young to embrace green ideals and more money to move to energy-efficient homes, throw out household detritus and protect their environment. The smartphone has become integral to this new trajectory. For some it is an intimidating burden linked to being on the wrong side of a new digital divide. But for most, however, it has brought back the extended family and old friends, and helped resolve intergenerational conflicts though facilitating new forms of grandparenting. It has also become central to health issues, whether by Googling information or looking after frail parents. The smartphone enables this sense of getting younger as people download the music of their youth and develop new interests. This is a book about acknowledging late middle age in contemporary Ireland. How do older people in Ireland experience life today?

Abstract

In contrast to the research that has hitherto been mainly interested in military facts, Nikolaus Braun pursues a primarily legitimizing conflict, a political war of faith in which the symbolic level was just as decisive as military realities. The investigation goes far beyond a conventional story of propaganda and press: not only flags, songs, postage stamps, uniforms, etc. became carriers of national propaganda, but also funerals, hunger strikes, executions, but also the entire foreign policy and large parts of the warfare downright staged. Braun traces how the possibilities of thinking and acting mutually stimulate, condition and block each other, thus making the inner logic of an apparently irrational conflict visible.

Abstract

Investigating the contacts between Italians and Irish over the decades separating the two world wars is like opening a small Pandora's box, creating a lively and unexpected portrait of the great number of political and cultural exchanges between two countries. Italy has always been an important cultural and spiritual reference point for Ireland; Ireland, on the other hand, has exerted a particular appeal among the Italians, appearing as a distant and mysterious place, a country of saints and heroes. Two geographically distant yet culturally close nations, whose plurality of relationships are interesting to investigate and deepen. This work brings to light an unexpectedly rich picture of a small world of passions and entanglements, of patriotism and opportunism, uniting two countries which have always been tormented by the same complex: being on the edge of political games in Europe.

Abstract

Ireland appears to be in the throes of a remarkable process of social and economic change. This text scrutinizes the interpretations and prescriptions that inform the deceptively simple metaphor of the ""Celtic Tiger"".

Abstract

Abstract

Whenever anyone mentions Ireland, the first things that leap to mind are the rolling green landscape, picturesque castles, and cheerful Irish people hanging out in pubs, listening to good music and drinking Guinness. These are typical scenes from various movies set on the “emerald isle,” as the poet William Drennan poetically called it. Ireland has a long and complicated history. Until the end of the Middle Ages, it was characterized by Celtic culture, Viking raids, and the Norman invasion, and the entire Modern Age was marked by the dispute between the British and the Irish over control of the island—and many bloody conflicts between the two. It was only in the twentieth century that the situation calmed down to some extent, and the island was divided into the independent Republic of Ireland and British Northern Ireland.

Abstract

The book knits together two of the most significant themes in the social and cultural history of modern Ireland - mass emigration and religious change - and aims to provide fresh insight into both. It addresses the churches' responses to emigration, both in theory and in practice. The book also assesses how emigration impacted on the churches both in relation to their status in Ireland, and in terms of their ability to spread their influence abroad. It first deals with the theoretical positions of the clergy of each denomination in relation to emigration and how they changed over the course of the nineteenth century, as the character of emigration itself altered. It then explores the extent of practical clerical involvement in the temporal aspects of emigration. This includes attempts to prevent or limit it, a variety of facilitation services informally offered by parish clergymen, church-backed moves to safeguard emigrant welfare, clerical advice-giving and clerically planned schemes of migration. Irish monks between the fifth and eighth centuries had spread Christianity all over Europe, and should act as an inspiration to the modern cleric. Tied in with this reading of the past, of course, was a very particular view of the present: the perception that emigration represented the enactment of a providential mission to spread the faith.

Abstract
