Abstract

Machine learning techniques have the potential of alleviating the complexity of knowledge acquisition. This book presents today’s state and development tendencies of machine learning. Abstract

This reprint provides research on how technologies such as artificial intelligence-based machine learning and deep learning can be applied to remote sensing. Through this, we can see the process of solving the existing problems of image and image signal processing for remote sensing. These techniques are computationally intensive and require the help of high-performance computing devices. With the development of devices such as GPUs, remote sensing technology, and aerial sensing technology, it is possible to monitor the Earth with high-resolution images and to obtain vast amounts of Earth observation data. The papers published in this reprint describe recent advances in big data processing and artificial intelligence-based technologies for remote sensing technology.

Boosting is an approach to machine learning based on the idea of creating a highly accurate predictor by combining many weak and inaccurate "rules of thumb." A remarkably rich theory has evolved around boosting, with connections to a range of topics, including statistics, game theory, convex optimization, and information geometry. Boosting algorithms have also enjoyed practical success in such fields as biology, vision, and speech processing. At various times in its history, boosting has been perceived as mysterious, controversial, even paradoxical.This book, written by the inventors of the method, brings together, organizes, simplifies, and substantially extends two decades of research on boosting, presenting both theory and applications in a way that is accessible to readers from diverse backgrounds while also providing an authoritative reference for advanced researchers. Abstract

The volume of data that is generated, stored, and communicated across different industrial sections, business units, and scientific research communities has been rapidly expanding. The recent developments in cellular telecommunications and distributed/parallel computation technology have enabled real-time collection and processing of the generated data across different sections. On the one hand, the internet of things (IoT) enabled by cellular telecommunication industry connects various types of sensors that can collect heterogeneous data. On the other hand, the recent advances in computational capabilities such as parallel processing in graphical processing units (GPUs) and distributed processing over cloud computing clusters enabled the processing of a vast amount of data. There has been a vital need to discover important patterns and infer trends from a large volume of data (so-called Big Data) to empower data-driven decision-making processes. Tools and techniques have been developed in machine learning to draw insightful conclusions from available data in a structured and automated fashion. Machine learning algorithms are based on concepts and tools developed in several fields including statistics, artificial intelligence, information theory, cognitive science, and control theory. The recent advances in machine learning have had a broad range of applications in different scientific disciplines. This book covers recent advances of machine learning techniques in a broad range of applications in smart cities, automated industry, and emerging businesses.
