Hematology has constantly been advancing in parallel with technological developments that have expanded our understanding of the phenotypic, genetic, and molecular complexity and extreme clinical and biological heterogeneity of leukemias. This in turn allowed for developing more effective and less toxic alternative therapeutic approaches directed against critical molecular pathways in leukemic cells. The continuous and rather extensive influx of new information regarding the key features and underlying mechanisms as well as treatment options of leukemias requires frequent updating of this topic. In the current practice of modern medicine, the treatment of infectious and nutritional disorders is well established. In contrast, currently genetic disorders/diseases and cancer constitute a substantial load in the clinic. The care of genetic-based diseases and cancer has become a major task in medical practices worldwide and it is unprecedented. It will be rare for any family to be entirely free of genetic disease, therefore genetic diseases impose a huge burden upon individuals, families, and societies.
