Abstract

Nutrition is an environmental factor modulating physiology throughout life and especially brain function. Nutrients in the brain can either fuel brain cells, contribute to tissue architecture, or initiate signaling pathways through their derivatives. Nutrients ultimately participate in brain development, cognitive and emotional behaviors, and can influence the susceptibility to develop brain pathologies. This book is a selection of current research on the impact of diet on brain function. Chapters include the role of lipids and glucose on the brain, nutrition and autophagy, and consequences of enteral feeding on brain-gut interactions. Taken together, this book targets all scientists, clinicians, teachers, and students eager to learn more about the impact of nutrition on brain function.

Abstract

Bálint’s syndrome is named after the Hungarian physician who first reported a remarkable case of a man with complex visuospatial deficits following bilateral lesions within parietal and occipital cortex (Bálint, 1909). The syndrome has three primary symptoms: simultanagnosia (impaired spatial awareness of more than one object at time), optic ataxia (misreaching to visual targets) and ocular apraxia (described by Bálint as “psychic paralysis of gaze”). Balint’s patients not only cannot perceive more than one object at time and therefore comprehend multi-object visual scene i.e. detect several object and grasp the relationship between them, they even fail to reach towards location of the single object, which they can perceive. The deficit of the allocation of spatial attention in Balint’s syndrome has been linked to the feature binding problems resulting in illusory conjunctions. Patients with Balint’s syndrome also show deficits in global processing i.e. when integration of multiple local elements into global compound shapes is required. Subsequently, Balint’s syndrome provides a unique opportunity to the nature and neuroanatomy of human visuospatial processing, in particular object representation, spatial awareness and distribution of visual attention. The dissociations between the components of Bálints’ syndrome, in particular simultanagnosia and optic ataxia, co-occurrence with visual neglect and extinction and finaly the different combinations of reported lesions raise a question about the status of the syndrome and whether it should be merely treated as a historical compilation of symptoms which may or may not coexist cohesively. Our aim is to provide an updated review of the research concerned with Balint’s syndrome and associated symptoms as well to creating a platform that facilitates discussions about this unique disorder. Review papers and original articles (including case studies) in healthy volunteers and neurological patients are welcomed.

Abstract

What do we mean by "behavioral neuroscience?" This volume aims at providing an overview of behavioral neuroscience and deepening neuronal mechanisms and brain circuits that regulate the fundamental aspects of human behavior, such as cognitive and emotional functions. It is intended to give the reader the most up-to-date vision of how the interaction between biological mechanisms and neurocognitive processes leads to complex and highly organized behaviors. In recent years the strong impulse given to research on behavioral neuroscience has produced a large literature that documents the high level of complexity of the issue, for which it is necessary to provide a reasoned multidimensional analysis able to integrate the expertise of different disciplines. The book offers an excellent synopsis of perspectives, methods, empirical evidences, and international references. Therefore, it represents an extraordinary opportunity to target neuroscientific hot topics and to outline new horizons in the study of the relationship between brain and behavior.

Abstract

This book follows up on the previous volume focusing on the different biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases. It includes original research works and review articles focusing on an improved understanding of disease mechanisms. It also aims to identify aspects of early therapeutic intervention for enhanced disease management. Some critical approaches include studies involving human tissue samples, mouse disease models, and different imaging techniques. These studies present the essential information necessary to address such pathological conditions in the future.

Abstract

This bibliographic material is patrimony of our Laboratory of the Behavior Physiology. This research unit originated in 1972 by will of Aldo Giachetti (until 1990) and with the beginning of the activity of Corrado Bucherelli. In the early 1980s, with Carlo Ambrogi Lorenzini (until 2004), the cataloging became more capillary and systematic, to continue to this day. All the researchers who worked in our laboratory contributed to this collection (Giovanna Tassoni 1986-2000, Benedetto Sacchetti 1996-2002 and Elisabetta Baldi from 1991). The study of learning, memory and behavior requires to follow a broad spectrum of neuroscience topics, ranging from neuronal biochemistry to neuropsychology. The Authors’ idea of publishing this collection comes from believing that a such website, though not exhaustive, might be a useful and targeted tool for the selection of bibliographic material in the field of behavioral neuroscience. The bibliographic references present at the publication (29500), accompanied by a brief comment highlighting the contents, are organized in relation to the topics (represented by the 99 themes) constituting the publication itself. The intersection of several references will point out the topics that represent them simultaneously. Concerning neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, references to agonists, antagonists or molecules interfering with the activity of these synapses have been inserted in the pages of the implicated neurotransmitter (e.g. acetylcholine). The pages including topics that could have been dealt with separately (e.g. active and passive avoidance) are introduced by a short explanatory note. The comment of each publication highlights the animal species used. Each comment is intended to indicate the content rather than the experimental results of paper. This choice comes from wanting to provide the reader with a more objective and less speculative comment.

Abstract

Abstract

Neurochemistry is a vitally important academic discipline that contributes to our understanding of molecular, cellular, and medical neurobiology. As a field, neurochemistry focuses on the role of the chemical entities that build the nervous system, the function of neurons and glial cells in health and disease, aspects of cell metabolism and neurotransmission, and degenerative processes and aging of the nervous system. Accordingly, this book contains chapters on a variety of topics related to the neurochemical basis of brain function and dysfunction. The volume is organized into four chapters: I. The Chemical Basis of Neural Function and Dysfunction; II. Synaptic Transmission and Amino Acid Neurotransmitters; III. Trends of Protein Aggregation in Neurodegenerative Diseases; IV. Targeting the NO/cGMP/CREB Phosphorylation Signaling Pathway in Alzheimer's Disease. Chapters contain comprehensive reviews of these different areas written by experts in their respective fields. This book is a valuable resource for neurochemists and other scientists alike. In addition, it contributes to the training of current and future neurochemists and, hopefully, will lead us on the path to curing some of the biggest challenges in human health.
