Abstract

Signs Becoming Signs evinces a broad, transdisciplinary perspective based on the thinking of Charles Sanders Peirce. In an effort to account for our knowledge of a universe open to an infinity of interpretations, the author dissolves many of the age-old dichotomies of Western thought into complementarities, which are qualified by a pair of Peirce's key concepts, vagueness and generality. These two terms are placed within the contemporary context of the abstract disciplines (Zeno's paradoxes, the mathematical continuum, G. Spencer-Brown's laws of form, Godel's proof), physics (relativity, quantum theory, Susan Petrilli teaches in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at the Institute of the Philosophy of Language at the University of Bari. Bohm' s interconnectedness, Wheeler's participatory universe, Prigogine' s dissipative structures), biology (Maturana and Varel's autonomous living systems, Schrodinger's oneness of consciousness), and finally social psychology (Deleuze and Guattari's schizoanalysis).

Abstract

With The Sense of Grammar, Peircean studies take a giant step forward, moving from a preoccupation with textual exegesis into the battleground of linguistic analysis. Working along the lines suggested by Peirce's theory of signs, as interpreted within the context of the philosopher's entire oeuvre, Michael Shapiro proposes a major reorientation of linguistic theory and a shift in the ultimate goals of the study of language structure. Part One provides a theoretical dissection of Peirce's semeiotic and evaluates its importance to structural linguistics. In it Shapiro grapples with the main differences between the theory of signs as Peirce held it before and after 1906. He then applies Peirce's semeiotic to the development of a new theory of grammar, which he tests in Part Two. Drawing examples primarily from the Russian language, Shapiro demonstrates how Peircean semeiotics engages the actual problems of linguistic structure subtended by real data and resolves them in the areas of phonology, morphophonemics, and morphology and semantics.

Abstract

Abstract

Founder of American pragmatism, Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) is considered the logician of this movement. He was however, just as much as William James, a great psychologist, working on the development of nascent experimental psychology, trying above all to think about the possible links between logic, psychology and metaphysics, by the elaboration of a "logical analysis of products of thought ”, inspired by Kantianism and medieval times (Ockam and Duns Scotus). A determined anti-psychologist and yet favourable to the taking into account of certain facts of psychology, anxious to extend formal logic to its philosophical (or semiotic) dimension, Peirce wanted to build a new model of the mind, which would extend to d 'other forms of intelligence than human thought, by a formal use of signs which nevertheless remains attentive to their irreducible wave. By presenting the main axes of this project - criticism of intuition and internalism, wave of sensation, theory of thought-sign, semiotics of the wave, reflections on logical machines, intentionality and mental images, normative conceptions of rationality and beliefs - these studies aim to reveal the originality and fruitfulness of Peircian ideas in philosophy of mind, and to show the coherence of this philosophical project close in many respects to the third path indicated by Kant in his deduction from categories, that of a “system of preformation of pure reason”.

Abstract

How can sincere, well-meaning people unintentionally perpetuate discrimination based on race, sex, sexuality, or other socio-political factors? To address this question, Lara Trout engages a neglected dimension of Charles S. Peirce's philosophy - human embodiment - in order to highlight the compatibility between Peirce's ideas and contemporary work in social criticism. This compatibility, which has been neglected in both Peircean and social criticism scholarship, emerges when the body is fore-grounded among the affective dimensions of Peirce's philosophy (including feeling, emotion, belief, doubt, instinct, and habit). Trout explains unintentional discrimination by situating Peircean affectivity within a post-Darwinian context, using the work of contemporary neuroscientist Antonio Damasio to facilitate this contextual move. Since children are vulnerable, naïve, and dependent upon their caretakers for survival, they must trust their caretaker's testimony about reality. This dependency, coupled with societal norms that reinforce historically dominant perspectives (such as being heterosexual, male, middle-class, and/or white), fosters the internalization of discriminatory habits that function non-consciously in adulthood. The Politics of Survival brings Peirce and social criticism into conversation. On the one hand, Peircean cognition, epistemology, phenomenology, and metaphysics dovetail with social critical insights into the inter-relationships among body and mind, emotion and reason, self and society. Moreover, Peirce's epistemological ideal of an infinitely inclusive community of inquiry into knowledge and reality implies a repudiation of exclusionary prejudice. On the other hand, work in feminism and race theory illustrates how the application of Peirce's infinitely inclusive communal ideal can be undermined by non-conscious habits of exclusion internalized in childhood by members belonging to historically dominant groups, such as the economically privileged, heterosexuals, men, and whites. Trout offers a Peircean response to this application problem that both acknowledges the "blind spots" of non-conscious discrimination and recommends a communally situated network of remedies including agapic love, critical common-sensism, scientific method, and self-control.

Abstract

This book is an attempt to understand a significant part of the complex thought of Charles Sanders Peirce, especially in those areas which interested him most: scientific method and related philosophical questions. It is organized primarily from Peirce's own writings, taking chronological settings into account where appropriate, and pointing out the close connections of several major themes in Peirce's work which show the rich diversity of his thought and its systematic unity. Following an introductory sketch of Peirce the thinking and writer is a study of the spirit and phases of scientific inquiry, and a consideration of its relevance to certain outstanding philosophical views which Peirce held. This double approach is necessary because his views on scientific method are interlaces with a profound and elaborate philosophy of the cosmos. Peirce's thought is unusually close-knit, and his difficulty as a writer lies in his inability to achieve a partial focus without bringing into view numerous connections and relations with the whole picture of reality. Peirce received some of the esteem he deserves when the publication of his Collected Papers began more than thirty-five years ago. Some reviewers and critics, however, have attempted to fit Peirce into their own molds in justification of a particular position; others have disinterestedly sought to present him in completely detached fashion. Here, the author has attempted to understand Peirce as Peirce intended himself to be understood, and has presented what he believes Perice's philosophy of scientific method to be. He singles out for praise Peirce's Greek insistence on the primacy of theoretical knowledge and his almost Teilhardian synthesis of evolutionary themes. Primarily philosophical, this volume analyzes Peirce's thought using a theory of knowledge and metaphysics rather than formal logic.

Abstract

A pioneer in many fields of logic and philosophy - of knowledge, language, mathematics, and psychology - Peirce (1839-1914) is best known for his work in semiotics. This is also the founder of pragmatism, a major philosophical currents of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth e. But this pragmatism is still unrecognized, and too often associated with the two other classical theorists of the movement, William James and John Dewey. However, in his time already, Peirce had renamed it “pragmaticism”, to distance himself from the too materialistic, utilitarian and moralistic reading of his followers. For him, pragmatism was understood above all not as a doctrine, but as a method of conceptual clarification, based on a semantic and semiotic interpretation of logic, which, once the false problems of metaphysics had been eliminated, should open up to a new conception of scientific inquiry, meaning and knowledge, in the service of a scientific and realistic metaphysics, strongly inspired by Duns Scotus. The aim of this work is to identify three major characteristics of Peircian pragmatism: therapeutic, philosophical method of "manipulation of signs", scientific method of fixing true beliefs. This is where the specificity, originality and fruitfulness of Peircian pragmatism reside, which makes it impossible to confuse it with that of James or Dewey, as with contemporary neo-pragmatism (Richard Rorty).

Abstract

The major principles and systems of C. S. Peirce's ground-breaking theory of signs and signification are now generally well known. Less well known, however, is the fact that Peirce initially conceived these systems within a 'Philosophy of Representation', his latter-day version of the traditional grammar, logic and rhetoric trivium. In this book, Tony Jappy traces the evolution of Peirce's Philosophy of Representation project and examines the sign systems which came to supersede it. Exploring the potential of the later sign-systems that Peirce scholars have hitherto been reluctant to engage with and extending Peirce's semiotic theory beyond the much canvassed systems of his Philosophy of Representation, this book will be essential reading for everyone working in the field of semiotics.

Abstract

Diagrams are an essential part of the most diverse processes of communication and cognition. Indeed, today the production of all kinds of text (including this one) is mediated by diagrammatic tools to be found on computer desktops. Not surprisingly, then, diagrams have become the object of much historical and theoretical work. This book--volume 2 of the Proceedings of the 33rd International Wittgenstein Symposium--is dedicated to this quickly growing field of interdisciplinary research. It includes contributions from philosophy, sociology (space syntax), art history, and history of science. Historically, there is a focus on Otto Neurath and his famous visual language (ISOTYPE), while the new attempts at theorizing diagrams presented here are mainly inspired by Charles Sanders Peirce and Ludwig Wittgenstein.
