This book introduces the idea of anthroponomy - the organization of humankind to support autonomous life - as a response to the problems of today's purported "Anthropocene" age. It argues for a specific form of accountability for the redressing of planetary-scaled environmental problems. The concept of anthroponomy helps confront geopolitical history shaped by the social processes of capitalism, colonialism, and industrialism, which have resulted in our planetary situation. Involving Anthroponomy in the Anthropocene: On Decoloniality explores how mobilizing our engagement with the politics of our planetary situation can come from moral relations. This book focuses on the anti-imperial work of addressing unfinished decolonization, and hence involves the "decolonial"work of cracking open the common sense of the world that supports ongoing colonization. "Coloniality" is the name for this common sense, and the discourse of the "Anthropocene" supports it. A consistent anti-imperial and anti-capitalist politics, one committed to equality and autonomy, will problematize the Anthropocene through decoloniality. Sometimes the way forward is the way backward. Written in a novel style that demonstrates - not simply theorizes - moral relatedness, this book makes a valuable contribution to the fields of Anthropocene studies, environmental studies, decolonial studies, and social philosophy. Scepticism is a philosophical current in which doubt is neither a discomfort to be overcome, nor an artifice located at the beginning of an investigation aiming at its own overcoming, but a way of speaking and of standing in existence. What does such a position imply on the anthropological level? That contrary to those who have thought of doubt as a preparation for faith or for the refoundation of science, it is more natural to doubt than to believe? The chapters in this volume examine how modern sceptical doubt, born of its implementation in Montaigne's Essays, far from being a negative disposition of mind that leads to despair, has contributed to revalorizing opinion and belief in a regime of uncertainty, to rehabilitating the imagination and the senses, while promoting other uses of reason. The book is aimed at all readers who are interested in the renewal of the conception of philosophy through doubt, whether it be its discursive practices or its values. It also invites us to reflect on the link between the philosophical discourse on humanity and the human sciences, a link that the sceptical substitution of an anthropology of the relation to the metaphysical approach to humanity has made possible.

"Souvent éludée par l'histoire de la philosophie, la question philosophique et médicale de la différence des sexes est fondamentale à l'époque moderne. Les modèles pour penser cette différence proviennent essentiellement de deux anthropologies opposées : celle de Descartes et celle de Cureau de la Chambre. Leurs sciences de l'être humain examinent tout d'abord les interactions entre corps et esprit, mais elles mettent surtout en valeur les pensées propres du corps par le biais de l'imagination. C'est à même le corps que se décide si femmes et hommes sont égaux. Les lectures critiques de ces deux modèles proposées d'un côté par Malebranche et de l'autre par Poulain de la Barre confirment que le xviie siècle constitue un tournant dans l'analyse psycho-physiologique et morale. La confrontation de ces quatre philosophes permet de comprendre comment se sont constituées des lignées théoriques sur sexe et genre qui sont toujours actuelles : celle de l'égalitarisme et celle d'un différencialisme qui peut être inégalitaire ou égalitaire."

The work of the German philosopher Helmuth Plessner (1892-1985) inspired generations of scholars and has been enjoying a recent renaissance. This volume offers the first substantial English-language introduction to Plessner's philosophical anthropology, contextualising it by comparison with the more familiar contemporaries such as Bergson, Cassirer and Merleau-Ponty, but also showing his relevance to contemporary discussion in a variety of scholarly fields. Helmuth Plessner (1892-1985) was one of the founders of philosophical anthropology, and his book The Stages of the Organic and Man, first published in 1928, has inspired generations of philosophers, biologists, social scientists, and humanities scholars. This volume offers the first substantial introduction to Plessner's philosophical anthropology in English, not only setting it in context with such familiar figures as Bergson, Cassirer, and Merleau-Ponty, but also showing Plessner's relevance to contemporary discussions in a wide variety of fields in the humanities and sciences.
