This book compiles selected papers from the Proceedings of the 1st International Online Conference on Nanomaterials, held 1-15 September, 2018 on sciforum.net, an online platform for hosting scholarly e-conferences and discussion groups. It targets a broad readership of physicists, chemists, materials scientists, biologists, environmentalists, and nanotechnologists, and provides interesting examples of the most recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, and applications of nanomaterials.

Understanding the origins of the Universe and how it works and evolves is the present mission of a large community of physicists. It calls for a large scale vision, involving general relativity, astrophysics, and cosmology. Theoretical physics is presently at an important moment in its history. As predicted by Einstein, gravitational waves have been experimentally proven to exist. With the discovery of the Higgs boson, the set of interactions and elementary particles that is called the "standard model" (SM), is complete. Yet the Higgs boson itself, and how it breaks the electroweak symmetry, remains a fascinating subject requiring further studies and verification. Furthermore, several experimental facts are not accounted for by the SM: (i) the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, (ii) the nature and origin of dark matter, and (iii) the origin of neutrino masses; these have no unique, if any, explanation in the SM and yet will require answers from particle physics. We need to explore further both SM and its extensions. This is a subject of papers included in this book, which gives representation to the topics discussed during the Matter to the Deepest conference in 2019 in Poland (http://indico.if.us.edu.pl/event/5).

This compendium represents a starting point for those who wish to review the main topics of Physics in view of the admission tests to the scientific faculties. The main purpose of the text is to intrigue the reader, invite them to ask questions about the world around us and provide them with the basic skills to face the admission test to the University, serenely and with the appropriate competence. This is not a book and it is certainly not exhaustive, but it remains consistent with the topics proposed in the admission tests. The volume is divided into 8 parts which deal with the main topics that students face during secondary school: kinematics, dynamics, fluids, gas, thermodynamics, electrostatics, geometric optics and waves. Each topic is accompanied by multiple choice questions with frequently commented answers. The complexity in the presentation of the topics is weighed on the knowledge that a student leaving the secondary school should have acquired during the course of their studies.

Dès l’invention des lasers au début des années 1960, l’application à la fusion nucléaire a été envisagée dans tous les pays développés. Des recherches furent entreprises en même temps que s’amélioraient les performances des lasers. En France, l’étude des plasmas créés par laser en vue de la fusion fut lancée au centre CEA de Limeil en partenariat avec les laboratoires de Marcoussis de la CGE. Dans le contexte d’un effort commun, semi confidentiel, de recherche et de développement, le résultat le plus marquant fut l’observation en 1969 des premières réactions de fusion obtenues de façon contrôlée et reproductible dans une expérience d’irradiation laser. Parallèlement, des programmes de recherches débutaient discrètement dans le centre californien à vocation militaire de Livermore et un peu plus tard au sein d’un groupe privé, KMS-industries. On ne commença à en connaître les détails qu’au début des années 1970 après une levée partielle du secret entourant les compressions de combustible thermonucléaire. S’appuyant sur des simulations numériques fouillées mais considérées depuis comme exagérément optimistes, la fusion par laser acquit ainsi un supplément de crédibilité. On passa alors de l’époque des pionniers à celle des grands projets. Dans cet ouvrage, l’auteur, témoin et acteur de cette aventure, nous livre un récit, fait de science et de vécu, de la première décennie d’une longue histoire.
