Abstract

This book will tell all you need to know about British English spelling. It's a referente work intended for anyone interested in the English language, especially those who teach it, whatever the age or mother tongue of their students. It will be particularly useful to those wishing to produce well-designed materials for teaching initial literacy via phonics, for teaching English as a foreign or second language, and for teacher training. English spelling is notoriously complicated and difficult to learn; it is correctly described as much less regular and predictable than any other alphabetic orthography. However, there is more regularity in the English spelling system than is generally appreciated. This book provides, for the first time, a thorough account of the whole complex system. It does so by describing how phonemes relate to graphemes and vice versa, it enables searches for particular words, so that one can easily find, not the meanings or pronunciations of words, but the other words with which those with unusual phoneme-grapheme/grapheme phoneme correspondences keep company. Other unique features of this book include teacher-friendly lists of correspondences and various regularities not described by previous authorities, for example the strong tendency for the letter-name vowel phonemes (the names of the letters ) to be spelt with those single letters in non-final syllables.

Abstract

In this monograph, Roberta Morano re-examines one of the foundational works of the Omani Arabic dialectology field, Carl Reinhardt's Ein arabischer Dialekt gesprochen in 'Oman und Zanzibar (1894). This German-authored work was prolific in shaping our knowledge of Omani Arabic during the twentieth century, until the 1980s when more recent linguistic studies on the Arabic varieties spoken in Oman began to appear. Motivated by an urgent need to expand and reinforce our understanding of Omani Arabic, the book provides a linguistic analysis of the Omani vernacular spoken in the al-ʿAwābī district (northern Oman), based on the speech of fifteen informants recruited throughout the area. It also provides a comparative analysis of the new data with that collected by Carl Reinhardt in 1894. This comparison enables the reader to appreciate the extent of diachronic linguistic variation in the region, and also sheds light on the threats that such variation poses to Omani-specific linguistic features. Organised in four chapters, the book presents a sociolinguistic analysis of the Omani linguistic landscape followed by an examination of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the al-ʿAwābī vernacular. Each chapter contains primary data collected by the author in situ compared, when applicable, with Carl Reinhardt's materials. The appendix includes two sample texts extrapolated from the recordings, fourteen proverbs and one traditional song. This study will be of interest to those working in the fields of Omani Arabic, historical and comparative linguistics, translation and interpretation, or those with an interest in how languages develop over time.

Abstract

This text is a practical guide for linguists, and programmers, who work with data in multilingual computational environments. We introduce the basic concepts needed to understand how writing systems and character encodings function, and how they work together at the intersection between the Unicode Standard and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Although these standards are often met with frustration by users, they nevertheless provide language researchers and programmers with a consistent computational architecture needed to process, publish and analyze lexical data from the world's languages. Thus we bring to light common, but not always transparent, pitfalls which researchers face when working with Unicode and IPA. Having identified and overcome these pitfalls involved in making writing systems and character encodings syntactically and semantically interoperable (to the extent that they can be), we created a suite of open-source Python and R tools to work with languages using orthography profiles that describe author- or document-specific orthographic conventions. In this cookbook we describe a formal specification of orthography profiles and provide recipes using open source tools to show how users can segment text, analyze it, identify errors, and to transform it into different written forms for comparative linguistics research.

Abstract

Learning to read, and to spell are two of the most important cultural skills that must be acquired by children, and for that matter, anyone learning a second language. We are not born with an innate ability to read. A reading system of mental representations that enables us to read must be formed in the brain. Learning to read in alphabetic orthographies is the acquisition of such a system, which links mental representations of visual symbols (letters) in print words, with pre-existing phonological (sound) and semantic (comprehension) cognitive systems for language. Although spelling draws on the same representational knowledge base and is usually correlated with reading, the acquisition processes involved are not quite the same. Spelling requires the sequential production of letters in words, and at beginning levels there may not be a full degree of integration of phonology with its representation by the orthography. Reading, on the other hand, requires only the recognition of a word for pronunciation. Hence, spelling is more difficult than reading, and learning to spell may necessitate more complete representations, or more conscious access to them. The learning processes that children use to acquire such cognitive systems in the brain, and whether these same processes are universal across different languages and orthographies are central theoretical questions. Most children learn to read and spell their language at the same time, thus the co-ordination of these two facets of literacy acquisition needs explication, as well as the effect of different teaching approaches on acquisition. Lack of progress in either reading and/or spelling is also a major issue of concern for parents and teachers necessitating a cross-disciplinary approach to the problem, encompassing major efforts from researchers in neuroscience, cognitive science, experimental psychology, and education. The purpose of this Research Topic is to summarize and review what has been accomplished so far, and to further explore these general issues. Contributions from different perspectives are welcomed and could include theoretical, computational, and empirical works that focus on the acquisition of literacy, including cross-orthographic research.

Abstract

Voor het eerst sinds 1955 publiceert de Nederlandse Taalunie een geactualiseerde versie van het Groene Boekje. In de afgelopen tien jaar is een groot aantal woorden namelijk in onbruik geraakt en zijn er vele nieuwe woorden bijgekomen. Daarnaast wordt ook een aantal spellingregels veranderd of verduidelijkt. Het Groene Boekje is het enige echte naslagwerk waarin de officiële spellingregels van de Nederlandse Taalunie zijn verwoord in een Leidraad en een lijst met woorden is opgenomen, die gespeld is volgens die regels.

Abstract

This volume provides, for the first time, a pan-European view of the development of written languages at a key time in their history: that of the 16th century. The major cultural and intellectual upheavals that affected Europe at the time - Humanism, the Reformation and the emergence of modern nation-states - were not isolated phenomena, and the evolution of the orthographical systems of European languages shows a large number of convergences, due to the mobility of scholars, ideas and technological innovations throughout the period.

Abstract

The purpose of the monograph Crossroads of Orthography which aims, as did its predecessor Junctures of Orthography (2012), to present arguments for additions and changes to normative rules – is to encourage normative and orthographic activities in Slovenian linguistic society. In the 20th century, these activities were intensified only after publication of normative guides called “pravopis” and during polemical discussions that accompanied the results. With both monographs, we want to encourage public debate before the publication of the new normative guide and also to find answers to the language and normative difficulties, which are not problematic only in terms of linguistics and orthography, but also within the wider social environment. In six thematic sections of the monograph, 26 authors of 22 articles deal with specific normative issues (capitalization and punctuation) as well as with other topics on different levels of grammatical description – phonology, morphology and word formation. The problems of orthography in other, often non-linguistic fields are discussed. In the last two parts of the monograph, the problems of lexicographic approaches to orthography and its relation to language culture are considered. Monografija Pravopisna razpotja tako z imenom kot z obliko predstavlja nadaljevanje monografije Pravopisna stikanja (2012) in prinaša »še več pravopisa«. S prispevki 27 avtoric in avtorjev z različnih ustanov in iz različnih okolij želi delo preseči idejna in metodološka nasprotja, s katerimi je nasičena slovenska jezikoslovna publicistika. Prispevki so združeni v šest poglavij (Ožja pravopisna poglavja: izbira začetnice in ločila, Pravorečje v pravopisu, Oblikoslovje in besedotvorje v pravopisu, Pravopisna norma na drugih področjih, Iz pravil v slovar in iz slovarja v pravila, Pravopisna izbira kot jezikovnokulturna izbira: leksika, skladnja in slog) in se lotevajo problema male in velike začetnice pri nadomestnih imenih in frazemih, težavne stave vejice, težav pri oblikoslovnem in besedotvornem pregibanju, pravorečnih vprašanj v novem pravopisu, kratkega stika med pravopisom in standardi na drugih področjih, problemov slovarske obravnave okrajšav in citatnosti, ter težav, povezanih z normativnim vrednotenjem jezikovnih.

Abstract

The purpose of the treatise is to present arguments for supplementing and changing orthographic rules and, at the same time, for confirming their adequacy. It is particularly questions on language use raised in public that draw attention to flaws in existing rules, to problems with interpreting them and to new, not yet recorded uses. The treatise comprises findings of 18 authors. Namen monografije je predstaviti utemeljitve za dopolnitve in spremembe pravopisnih pravil, hkrati pa tudi za potrditev njihove ustreznosti. Pravopisna problematika se je po obdobju kritik ob izidu SP 2001 v zadnjem desetletju umaknila v ozadje in nova vprašanja niso bila več strokovno tematizirana v tolikšni meri, kot smo bili vajeni v preteklih obdobjih, čeprav ostajajo enako pereča. Zlasti javno zastavljena jezikovna vprašanja opozarjajo na pomanjkljivosti obstoječih pravil, na težave pri njihovem interpretiranju in na nove, še ne evidentirane položaje rabe. Monografijo, v kateri je svoja spoznanja strnilo 18 avtorjev, sestavljajo trije vsebinski sklopi: prispevki prvega sklopa umeščajo pravopisni dogovor v širše družbeno okolje, v drugem avtorji iščejo odgovore na posamezna tradicionalna, a še vedno odprta pravopisna vprašanja. V tretjem sklopu je odprto vprašanje posredništva in posrednikov pravopisa, terminologije, pravorečnih ter onomastičnih vprašanj v pravopisu. Iz prispevkov v monografiji je razvidna težnja po posodobitvi pravopisnih smernic, po večji avtentičnosti jezikovnega gradiva in odprtosti do že uveljavljenih slogovnih možnosti.
