L'innovation technologique a une histoire. Elle ne surgit pas tout armée du cerveau d'un inventeur de génie, non plus qu'elle ne naît spontanément d'un besoin pressant du marché. In the past few decades, the optical communication industry has explored multiple degrees of freedom of the photon, such as time, wavelength, amplitude, phase, polarization, and space, to significantly reduce the cost/bit of data transmission by increasing the capacity per fiber through multiplexing technology and by reducing the size and power through electronic and photonic integration. Mit der allmählichen Wandlung des Internets und seiner Dienste zu einem Transaktionsmedium und dem damit einhergehenden Bedarf nach geschäftlichen Kollaborationsplattformen sowie der zugleich zunehmenden Durchdringung der betrieblichen Prozesse mit integrierten Informationssystemen ergeben sich Möglichkeiten, Leistungen von Unternehmen, insbesondere von kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen, gezielter miteinander zu verknüpfen und dabei typische Probleme des Zustandekommens von Transaktionen zu umgehen bzw. zu lindern. Es besteht das Potenzial, die (regionalen, mitunter grenzüberschreitenden) Verflechtungen zwischen Unternehmen zu erhöhen und dadurch deren betriebswirtschaftliche Situation zu vereinfachen. Die Ausschöpfung dieses Potenzials erscheint sowohl aus gesamtwirtschaftlicher als auch aus einzelwirtschaftlicher Sicht vorteilhaft. Diese Arbeit schlägt ein Modell zur Umsetzung einer dieser Zielsetzung entsprechenden Infrastrukturleistung vor und demonstriert die Generierung von Empfehlungen für das Schaffen, das Pflegen, das Beleben und den Ausbau von Transaktionen für die Teilnehmer einer Kollaborationsplattform zur Erhöhung der Transaktionsdynamik sowie zur Verdichtung der Transaktionsverflechtungen.

For his research on the topic of this book Ulrich Berger was awarded the Research Prize of the Vodafone Foundation and the WU Best Paper Award. This book studies the economics of telecommunications networks characterized by two-way interconnection. Special emphasis is put on the role of access charges. Starting from the standard model used in the literature on network competition, the effect of departing from three of this model's less realistic assumptions is investigated. First, call externalities are integrated into the model. Secondly, competition between three or more networks is studied in a dynamic setting. Finally, a local interaction structure between agents is introduced to replace the unrealistic assumption of balanced calling patterns. In each of these cases, some of the conventional wisdom on the role of access charges is overturned by new results.
