The volume presents the results of a research developed within a specific program of the European Union. The analysis conducted by Italian, French and Spanish scholars and coordinated by the Interuniversity Centre of Political Sociology of the University of Florence, reconstructs the training paths of the new generations within the social and economic context of Southern Europe, with particular regard to the condition of university students and to youth unemployment. The theme is also examined and discussed in relation to a broader sociological reflection on the values that shape the future of political culture in contemporary Europe.

When, in 1992, the citizens of Colorado ratified Amendment 2, effectively stripping lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals of protection from discrimination under the state's constitution, the vote divided the state and left the gay population disspirited and angry. Their psychological predicament offered an opportunity to examine the precise intersection at which the individual meets social oppression. Voted Out is the first to document the psychological impact of anti-gay legislation on the gay community, illustrating the range of reactions, from depression, anger, and anxiety to a sense of empowe

Latin America's long history of showing how racism can co-exist with racial mixture and conviviality offers useful ammunition for strengthening anti-racist stances. This volume asks whether cultural production has a particular role to play within discourses and practices of anti-racism in Latin America and the Caribbean. The contributors analyse music, performance, education, language, film and art in diverse national contexts across the region. The book also places Latin American and Caribbean racial formations within a broader global context. It shows that the region provides valuable opportunities for thinking about anti-racism, not least when recent political events worldwide have shown that, far from a 'post-racial' age, we are living in an era of intensified racist expression and racial injustice.

It aims to deepen the knowledge about violence practiced by young people, based, among others, on the following question: why, in the same family, only some develop delinquent behaviour? Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco were chosen, with a high incidence of juvenile offenses, to look more closely at the universe of those who committed crimes and their families - who are often not involved in crime. 61 adolescent offenders were interviewed in four institutions (three in Rio, one in Recife) and 31 of their brothers or cousins who stated that they had never committed infractions. Part of their testimonies is published in this work that seeks to understand these young people, their anxieties and anxieties in the experience of the present and construction of the future.

The rapid success of for-profit colleges and universities (FPCUs) only recently has caught the attention of scholars in academe. The continuing expansion of the proprietary higher education sector has lead to fundamental questions regarding the purpose and function of FPCUs. As new technologies continue to emerge, education is becoming of increasing import to employees seeking to upgrade their skills and employers in search of individuals who possess the necessary expertise and training to help their organizations succeed. For-profit institutions challenge traditional notions of the academy--such as shared governance, tenure, and academic freedom--by utilizing administrative practices that more aptly apply to the corporate arena. Moreover, they exclusively employ non-tenure-track faculty members. This study provides a framework for understanding faculty roles and responsibilities at for profit colleges and universities. The author employs a series of in-depth interviews with 53 faculty members, from four for-profit institutions. Utilizing a cultural framework, the study explores the attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions of faculty work with particular consideration given to faculty member's non-tenure-track status, participation in decision-making activities, and academic freedom. The study examines the culture of the faculty work by asking how the profit-seeking nature of the institution affects their efforts inside and outside of the classroom. The author introduces a new component to the cultural framework that illustrates how the close ties between FPCUs and business and industry affect the nature of faculty work.
