Aperias of European integration: between humanitarian universalism and sovereignism is the result of a study and research process that involved researchers from the University of Évora and the Centro de Investigação em Ciência Política (CICP) in Portugal and scholars from the DSU of Federico II in Naples and other prestigious Italian universities. The book, divided into three sections, deals with the conflict between universalism - understood as a philosophical principle of the Western cultural tradition and as a juridical-political principle at the basis of the integration process - and the principle of sovereignty, which instead tends to preserve the political autonomy of states in the process of integration. Contributions by: Peluso, Morfino, Cacciatore, Giannini, Rocha Chuna, Boemio, Basso, Amendola, Arienzo, Tinè, Höbel Donato, D'Acunto.

The main aim of this book is to discuss various modes of studying and defining the medieval self, based on a wide span of sources from medieval Western Scandinavia, c. 800-1500, such as archeological evidence, architecture and art, documents, literature, and runic inscriptions. The book engages with major theoretical discussions within the humanities and social sciences, such as cultural theory, practice theory, and cognitive theory. The authors investigate how the various approaches to the self influence our own scholarly mindsets and horizons, and how they condition what aspects of the medieval self are 'visible' to us. Utilizing this insight, we aim to propose a more syncretic approach towards the medieval self, not in order to substitute excellent models already in existence, but in order to foreground the flexibility and the complementarity of the current theories, when these are seen in relationship to each other. The self and how it relates to its surrounding world and history is a main concern of humanities and social sciences. Focusing on the theoretical and methodological flexibility when approaching the medieval self has the potential to raise our awareness of our own position and agency in various social spaces today.

(I) Mobilities in Prehistory. People, resources, objects, sites and territories is the result of the acknowledgement of human mobility as a central subject in archaeological research. It presents itself as a book with a plural and broad range, showcasing several contributions with distinctive theoretical and methodological approaches, multiple empirical case studies and different geographies across a large time span. This holistic and integrated framework is the one that is required to analyse mobility, a complex and multidimensional phenomenon of undeniable importance for the understanding of the dynamics that shaped past communities and their relations, not only between themselves, but also with the territory - dynamics that take shape in artefacts and structures, in built and lived landscapes bestowed to the passage of time. More than a contribution about a subject that explores divergent paths, this book intends, as well, to challenge other investigators to push forward a theme full of potential and relevance in a world that is now, more than ever before, in motion.

Information Science: visions and trends brings together a diverse range of views and voices about Information Science. Teachers and researchers from universities in five countries, Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Germany and Mexico explore and problematize the origins, evolution, theoretical and epistemological foundations of the scientific area, as pure (visions - different approaches / perspectives) and applied science. (trends - what is being followed, gaining body and materiality).Taken together, these contributions feed the vital debate about the impact of social and technological change on the concept of information, on information science teaching and research, and the important role of information in democratic societies.

New technologies have revealed previously unknown and invisible parts of the human body and made it visible at the molecular level, revealing in turn more detailed structures and arrangements than those which were previously available. In doing so, in many ways they refine, expand, and even completely overturn forms of contemporary knowledge. This book maps the shifts and blurring of boundaries in contemporary bioscientific discourse. The authors of its chapters trace the shifts of boundaries in terms of the gradual blurring of the validity of established concepts, interpretive frameworks, and standards of judgment, which are analysed from ontological, gnoseological, ethical, and social perspectives. At the same time, they also map the blurring of boundaries in terms of the interdisciplinary crossing of boundaries between various scientific and artistic disciplines. The shifting of boundaries ultimately forms a part of these boundaries' definition; upon the basis of a rationally guided discussion, these shifts can be guided and corrected so as to avoid any irreversible damage. Jana Tomašovičová is a philosopher with a special interest in contemporary philosophy and bioethics. She analyses the impact of biotechnology on traditional social, ethical, and anthropological concepts and their relevance in new conditions. She is an associate professor at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava, Slovakia. During her bioethics research, she conducted short research stays at the universities of Bonn, Heidelberg, Tübingen, and Zürich.

When scholars discuss the medieval past, the temptation is to become immersed there, to deepen our appreciation of the nuances of the medieval sources through debate about their meaning. But the past informs the present in a myriad of ways and medievalists can, and should, use their research to address the concerns and interests of contemporary society. This volume presents a number of carefully commissioned essays that demonstrate the fertility and originality of recent work in Medieval Studies. Above all, they have been selected for relevance. Most contributors are in the earlier stages of their careers and their approaches clearly reflect how interdisciplinary methodologies applied to Medieval Studies have potential repercussions and value far beyond the boundaries of the Middles Ages. These chapters are powerful demonstrations of the value of medieval research to our own times, both in terms of providing answers to some of the specific questions facing humanity today and in terms of much broader considerations. Taken together, the research presented here also provides readers with confidence in the fact that Medieval Studies cannot be neglected without a great loss to the understanding of what it means to be human.

This book is the result of interdisciplinary exchanges and brings together 16 international researchers to examine the links between territorial boundaries and the organization of societies. Following a comparative approach, the authors question, from the beginnings of modern states in the 14th century to today, the effects induced by the evolutions of these delimitations from two observation fields adjacent to each other: the territories between Burgundy and Franche-Comté where all boundaries seem to disappear; those between France and Switzerland where one of the last borders between France and a State that is not a member of the European Union is established. This comparison makes possible to determine what distinguishes a state border from territorial delimitations of other kinds.

"This unique volume utilises the UNESCO Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) framework to illustrate successful integration of sustainability education in post-secondary foreign language (FL) learning. Showcasing a variety of approaches to using content-based instruction (CBI) in college-level courses, this text valuably demonstrates how topics relating to environmental, social, and cultural dimensions of sustainability can be integrated in FL curricula. Chapters draw on case studies from colleges throughout the US and consider theoretical and practical concerns relating to models of sustainability-based teaching and learning. Chapters present examples of project-, problem-, and task-based approaches, as well as field work, debate, and reflective pedagogies to enhance students' awareness and engagement with sustainable development issues as they acquire a foreign language. Insights and recommendations apply across languages and highlight the potential contribution of FL learning to promote sustainability literacy amongst learners. This text will benefit researchers, academics, and educators in higher education with an interest in Modern Foreign Languages, sustainability education, training, and leadership more broadly. María J. de la Fuente is Professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance, German, and Slavic Languages and Literatures at The George Washington University, USA"--
