"Title Description: For the last sixty years discussion of 1950s science fiction cinema has been dominated by claims that the genre reflected US paranoia about Soviet brainwashing and the nuclear bomb. However, classic films, such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) and It Came from Outer Space (1953), and less familiar productions, such as It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958), were regularly exported to countries across the world. The histories of their encounters with foreign audiences have not yet been told. Science Fiction Cinema and 1950s Britain begins this task by recounting the story of 1950s British cinema-goers and the aliens and monsters they watched on the silver screen. Drawing on extensive archival research, Matthew Jones makes an exciting and important intervention by locating American science fiction films alongside their domestic counterparts in their British contexts of release and reception. He offers a radical reassessment of the genre, demonstrating for the first time that in Britain, which was a significant market for and producer of science fiction, these films gave voice to different fears than they did in America. While Americans experienced an economic boom, low immigration and the conferring of statehood on Alaska and Hawaii, Britons worried about economic uncertainty, mass immigration and the dissolution of the Empire. Dieses Interesse war auch die treibende Kraft der britischen Nichtverbreitungspolitik, die zu einem zentralen Aspekt der Außenpolitik wurde und in den Beziehungen zu den USA, zur Bundesrepublik Deutschland und Frankreich eine entscheidende Rolle spielte. Während die Briten von den USA als Lieferanten moderner Kernwaffentechnologie abhängig waren, drängten sie die Bundesrepublik zum Verzicht auf Nuklearwaffen. Dem ehemaligen Kriegsgegner Deutschland, obwohl inzwischen zum Verbündeten geworden, wollte man weiterhin nur einen niedrigeren Rang in der internationalen Szenerie gewähren. Aus diesen grundsätzlichen Zielen ergaben sich die britische Position in den Teststopp-Verhandlungen, die Ablehnung von Plänen zur Gründung einer multilateralen NATO-Atomstreitmacht (MLF) und die Haltung Londons in den Verhandlungen über einen Nichtverbreitungsvertrag.

This open access book traces the journey of nuclear law: its origins, how it has developed, where it is now, and where it is headed. There is renewed and deep international concern about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences that would result from the detonation of nuclear weapons in populated areas. Yet 25 years after the end of the Cold War, nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence remain central to the security doctrines of a significant number of states. Drawing on a range of perspectives, the volume depicted above explores what viewing nuclear weapons through a humanitarian lens entails, and why it is undergoing such a revival. "The Fukushima disaster invites us to look back and probe how nuclear technology has shaped the world we live in, and how we have come to live with it. Since the first nuclear detonation (Trinity test), and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, all in 1945, nuclear technology has profoundly affected world history and geopolitics, as well as our daily life and natural world. It has always been an instrument for national security, a marker of national sovereignty, a site of technological innovation and a promise of energy abundance. It has also introduced permanent pollution and the age of the Anthropocene. This volume presents a new perspective on nuclear history and politics by focusing on four interconnected themes - violence and survival; control and containment; normalizing through denial and presumptions; memories and futures - and exploring their relationships and consequences. It proposes an original reflection on nuclear technology from a long-term, comparative, and transnational perspective. It brings together contributions from researchers from different disciplines (anthropology, history, STS) and countries (US, France, Japan) on a variety of local, national and transnational subjects.
