L'unité des chrétiens est un impératif : Jésus, avant d'être arrêté puis crucifié, prie Dieu son Père : " Je ne prie pas seulement pour eux [ses disciples], je prie aussi pour ceux qui, grâce à leur parole, croiront en moi ; que tous soient un comme toi, Père, tu es en moi et que je suis en toi, qu'ils soient en nous eux aussi, afin que le monde croie que tu m'as envoyé " (évangile selon saint Jean, 17, 20-21, TOB ). L'unité entre chrétiens est encore loin d'être réalisée, malgré de grands pas en avant en moins d'un siècle : Eglises et Communautés ecclésiales s'ouvrent à la tâche œcuménique. Déjà en vertu de l'engagement officiel de l'Eglise catholique romaine, tant de l'Église latine que des Églises orientales en communion avec Rome, le droit canonique a pu traduire dans ses codes de 1983 et de 1990 les apports doctrinaux en faveur de l'œcuménisme, issus du Concile Vatican II (1962-1965) : ce dernier a eu la vocation de discerner notamment que les conditions étaient réunies pour concrétiser un œcuménisme de la pari de l'Eglise catholique romaine et de ses baptisés, afin d'œuvrer davantage à l'unité des chrétiens. Ouverture fraternelle et vérité doctrinale ont à enrichir toute démarche œcuménique soue la responsabilité de chaque " Église chrétienne " et de chaque " Communauté ecclésiale " : qu'existent ainsi deux expression: techniques pour désigner les Eglises, cela avertit que chacune n'admet pas encore l'agencement des critères d'ecclésialité préconisés par les autres Eglises. Selon seulement le degré de communion entre Eglises et selon les dispositions requises pour les baptisés concernés, une certaine hospitalité aux sacrements est devenue possible. Des critères catholiques romains existent à propos des sacrements de Réconciliation, de l'Eucharistie et de l'Onction des malades. L'accueil eucharistique est admis en principe dans des circonstances et des dispositions spirituelles, pastorales, thés logiques et canoniques que le canoniste Georges-Henri Ruyssei analyse de manière systématique. Il compare des normes cana niques et disciplinaires postconciliaires, tant universelles qui particulières (Afrique du Sud, Allemagne, Australie, Canada Etats-Unis, France, Suisse), en matière de communicatio in sacris, axée ici sur l'Eucharistie.

De wanden van het boerenhuis zijn uit bouwkundig en cultuurhistorisch oogpunt een aantrekkelijk onderwerp om te bestuderen: zij zijn in hun ontwikkeling in de tijd, misschien wel meer dan enig ander onderdeel van de boerderij, onderhevig geweest aan verschillende invloeden. Aan de ene kant werd hun constructie bepaald door het technisch kunnen en de beschikbare materialen; aan de andere kant leenden gevels wanden en muren van het boerenhuis zich bij uitstek om uitdrukking te geven aan de smaak en aan het werkelijke of vermeende aanzien van haar bewoners. Het spreekt vanzelf dat hierbij een grote rol speelde of deze laatsten over een ruime of krappe beurs beschikten en of zij tijden van welvaart of tegenspoed doormaakten. Als één van de oudste woonvormen heeft het boerenhuis, beter dan het stadshuis, bouwwijzen, die een lange ontwik- kelingsgeschiedenis achter de rug hebben, in zich bewaard. Maar de geschiedenis van de landelijke bouwkunst is, zoals van alle architectuur, méér dan een chronologisch overzicht van constructieve oplossingen, uiterlijke vormgevingen en ruimtelijke indelingen. Zij is vooral ook het verhaal van het denken en handelen van de mensen, die vorm aan haar gegeven hebben. Hierin nu heeft J.J. Voskuil, zonder de andere aspecten te verwaarlozen, een inzicht trachten te geven met 'Van vlechtwerk tot baksteen'. In eerste instantie heeft de schrijver, als wetenschappelijk ambtenaar verbonden aan het Volkskundebureau van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie voor Wetenschappen te Amsterdam, voor een bijdrage aan de Europese Volkskunde-atlas een literatuuronderzoek verricht naar de verspreiding van de verschillende bouwmaterialen en technieken in Nederland in het verleden. Later heeft hij voor deze uitgave in de reeks Monografieën van de Stichting Historisch Boerderij-onderzoek dit onderzoek nog belangrijk uitgebreid: door bestudering van oude landmeterskaarten, schilderijen, prenten, foto's e.d. heeft hij de overgang op nieuwe technieken en materialen zo dicht mogelijk op de voet trachten te volgen. Tenslotte heeft hij bijzondere aandacht besteed aan de redenen, die de boeren gehad kunnen hebben om met oude beproefde gewoonten te breken.
