Les récents actes de contrition de Jean-Paul II concernant les "erreurs du passé" ont suscité des réactions diverses et mitigées. Déjà, à la fin du mois de mars 1998, le Vatican avait rendu public un " Document d'Eglise " relatif à sa position sur l'extermination d'un tiers du peuple juif par les nazis. A travers ce document, intitulé Nous nous souvenons. Une réflexion sur la Shoah, l'Eglise, prétendant témoigner pour les Juifs après Auschwitz, entend dévoiler le sens de la shoah, interprétée à l'aune des catégories de l'histoire sainte. La destruction des Juifs d'Europe est ainsi érigée en expérience religieuse. Par d'habiles procédés rhétoriques, Nous nous souvenons élude l'examen frontal de l'antisémitisme et se livre à une entreprise de christianisation de la shoah, coupée de toutes ses déterminations historiques. La fidélité des Juifs à leur foi est implicitement présentée comme la principale cause de l'antijudaïsme, tandis que l'Eglise se décrit comme la seule véritable force de résistance face au nazisme. Le Vatican entreprend, à travers cette annexion symbolique, de se substituer aux victimes et d'accorder son pardon aux hommes. Dans cette analyse simplifiée à l'extrême, l'Eglise se présente comme une institution ingénue, jugeant l'histoire de l'antisémitisme comme si elle n'avait jamais pris part à sa genèse. Aucune manipulation rhétorique n'a été négligée pour réaffirmer les grandes orientations du dogmatisme catholique, à l'occasion d'un écrit officiel sur un événement aussi considérable que la shoah.
