Le christianisme a-t-il encore une parole d'espérance forte et crédible à délivrer au monde moderne? A l'Occident, en proie au vieillisement de sa population, aux replis identitaires, au consumérisme et à l'affadissement de ses valeurs historiques? Une parole à la fois compéhensible par le plus grand nombre et en dialogue ouvert et fécond avec la culture contemporaine? C'est le défi relevé par l'auteur, universitaire de formation, habitué au travail philosophique et théologique, et qui garde comme évêque et pasteur une bienveillante attention aux préoccupations des gens ordinaires. Il répond en croyant et en intellectuel, d'abord sous la forme d'un traité théologique simplifié, à la lecture aisée, puis de manière originale sous celle d'un conte philosophique moderne -Voyage d'hiver- qui éclaire par la littérature, avec une élégance d'écriture qui ravit, la problématique de l'espérance chrétienne dans un monde qui en manque cruellement. Les grands défis actuels -comme la famile, le couple, l'hiver démographique, les nouvelles religiosités, le rapport science et foi, la désespérance ambiante, etc.-, sources fréquentes de peurs face à l'avenir, sont évoqués et mis en perspective pour susciter des sursauts d'espérance. Aux cent raisons de désespérer, l'auteur oppose les mille raisons d'espérer, invite à avancer au large et à "espérer contre toute espérance"...
