Mateloosheid. Dat is hét kenmerk van de moderne tijd. Die staat daarmee haaks op de grote Europese Traditie, die teruggaat op Athene en Jeruzalem. Want in die Traditie gaat het om de juiste Maat, maathouden, maatvoering, matigheid. De kerngedachte is dat de juiste Maat te vinden is in de werkelijkheid, al is ze niet zichtbaar. Men moet er oog voor hebben. Er is een juiste maat in kleding, een juiste maat in eten en drinken, een juiste maat in werken en ontspannen, in vreugde en verdriet, in vrijheid en gelijkheid, ja, in alles. Tact is een vorm van maatvoering. Redelijkheid is dat ook. Goed en kwaad zijn uiteindelijk niets anders dan maat houden.Dit inzicht, deze wijsheid, is weggevaagd door de ideologieën van de Verlichting en de Romantiek, die de moderne wereld domineren. Het zijn beide ideologieën van de oneindigheid, dat wil zeggen mateloosheid. De Verlichting zoekt het heil in de eindeloze economische en technologische vooruitgang, de oneindige bevrediging van de begeertes. De Romantiek zoekt het geluk in eindeloos experimenteren en de eindeloze introspectie, op zoek naar het oneindige Zelf.Het gevolg is een wereld die uit het lood is geslagen en een mens die niet weet waar hij het zoeken moet. Terwijl het zo eenvoudig is: de juiste Maat.Onze voorouders wisten het. Wij zijn het vergeten. Dit boek stoft de Traditie af en brengt haar weer tot leven.

« Justice sociale » est pour tous aujourd’hui le nom d’un malaise et d’une tâche sans fin. Ce problème général, des praticiens l’ont relancé avec insistance durant deux années auprès d’amis engagés dans la recherche et l’enseignement en sciences humaines et morales. Les visées différentes ont fait apparaître d’abord que les solutions proposées et pratiquées au nom d’une doctrine politique ou économique restent de portée fort brève et engendrent ou accroissent souvent un climat de scepticisme, que ne compense pas le courage pourtant réel de l’action. De plus, en posant sérieusement la question de la justice sociale, chacune des disciplines ici concernées se voit obligée de reconnaître son enracinement dans deux évidences : la première, qu’il n’y a pas de limite supérieure à la dépense quand il s’agit d’assurer plus de dignité humaine; la seconde, qu’il faut que cette dépense soit efficace. Le savoir théorique tend par nature à séparer ces deux évidences en les rationalisant. Par contre, ceux que leur tâche quotidienne voue à promouvoir l’efficacité de la dépense perdent facilement de vue l’invitation dynamique que constitue l’infini de l’égale dignité pour tous. Puissent ces textes en leur incontestable naïveté amorcer un échange actif entre praticiens et théoriciens.
