Het onderwerp van deze publicatie is de relatie tussen architectuur en sociale interactie. In steden bestaan ongeschreven regels die de wijze structureren waarop mensen hun onderlinge contacten afstemmen op hun omgeving. Op een koude, winderige plek nemen mensen minder tijd voor een gezellig kletspraatje dan bij een knapperend haardvuur. Niet alleen de fysieke omgeving, ook de sociale context bepaalt hoe mensen met elkaar omgaan. Hoe openbaarder een plek is, hoe groter de kans dat je er mensen tegenkomt die je niet kent, hoe meer privé de plek is, hoe vertrouwder het voor de meeste mensen aanvoelt. Communicatie en privacy zijn daardoor met elkaar verbonden begrippen en de vraag die de auteurs zich stellen is: hoe kan de architectuur dit faciliteren? Bij woongebouwen met meerdere appartementen zijn de problemen en oplossingen complex, met name omdat er veel ruimtes liggen tussen de woning en de straat. Deze ruimtes worden op efficiëntie in ruimtegebruik en veiligheid bij ontruimingen ingericht, maar niet of nauwelijks op hun rol als facilitator van interactie. Aan de hand van praktische voorbeelden wordt uitgelegd hoe deze controle over interactie werkt, zowel in theorie als in de praktijk.
