Visuality in the theater is as yet rarely a subject of theoretical investigation. This book presents an exploration of this under-explored terrain, demonstrating the use of new theoretical insights into vision and visuality for the analysis of theater and performance - and simultaneously shows theater and performance to be an excellent 'theoretical object' for exploring the cultural, historical and embodied character of visuality.

At the intersection of photography, art, and graphic design, Sarah Illenberger creates vivid imagesthat make stories come to life. The visual language of Sarah Illenberger is extremely effective at translating content, data, and ideas into vivid, often humorous images. Whether big or small, abstract or complex, the subjects and problems of our times are pointedly depicted by this renowned illustrator and designer in concise visual forms. The conceptual strength, descriptive intensity, and spatial finesse of her style make her work particularly attractive for international magazines that are looking for a catchy and entertaining way to illustrate their articles. Meticulously created with analog handicraft using simple materials and household items such as paper, food, textiles, and wood, Illenberger's richly detailed work opens up new perspectives on seemingly familiar, iconographically-charged forms and content. She expertly avoids imbuing her materials and subjects with artificial significance or forcing a meaning upon them. Instead, Illenberger's penetrating creative eye reveals their true essence--one that has usually remained hidden just under the surface from our fleeting and routine everyday glances. Sarah Illenberger is the first monograph of the Berlin-based artist's work. In addition to commissioned designs for international magazines and brands such as Vanity Fair, Time Magazine, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Wallpaper, and Nike, it also includes a selection of current personal projects. -- Book Description.

The first book to explore the world's most significant architectural exhibitions of the 20th century. How do you exhibit a building, a locality, a city? 'Exhibit A' reveals how architecture has pushed the boundaries of exhibition as a medium and how, in turn, exhibitions have shaped the discipline of architecture. Focusing on 80 landmark architecture exhibitions mounted in countries around the world between 1948 and 2000, and featuring 300 images, this groundbreaking overview is both a vital reference and a visually compelling study of the way we look at built work.

"Through a series of detailed historical case studies, Alison Griffiths explores the uncanny and unforgettable visceral power of the medieval cathedral, the panorama, the planetarium, the IMAX theater, and the science museum. Examining these structures as exemplary spaces of immersion and interactivity, Griffiths reveals the sometimes surprising: antecedents of modern media forms, suggesting the spectator's deepseated desire to become. Immersed in a virtual world. Shivers Down Your Spine demonstrates how immersive and interactive museum display techniques such as large video displays, reconstructed environments, and touch-screen computer interactives have redefined the museum space, fueling the opposition between public and private, science and spectacle, civic and corporate interests, voice and text, and life and death. In her remarkable study of sensual spaces, Griffiths explains why, for centuries, we keep coming back for more."--Jacket.
