Timber as a traditional building material provides exciting possibilities in architectural design that have long been recognised and employed. Quite apart from the aesthetic value of the different kinds of wood, one of the most important advantages is its sustainability which make it part of energy-efficient architecture. Touch Wood presents outstanding examples of the latest architectural designs from all over the world for which wood has been used extensively. Richly illustrated this title shows the innovative ways timber is currently being handled and how its use has been expanded by new technologies and experiments with traditional building methods.

Hilde de Haan Wood Works Onix Architecture in wood Design: Peter de Kan, Illustrated (colour), Hardback, 324 pages, Size: 17 x 24 cm English/Dutch edition, ISBN 978-90-5662-679-2, € 47.00 November 2009 Concept and compilation: Haiko Meijer together with Hilde de Haan, Peter de Kan and Alex van de Beld Partially made possible through the support of Timber Information Centre, Almere Wood Works Onix is an adventurous exploration of wood architecture by Onix, the Dutch architectural firm famed for their innovative use of wood. Their preference for this material has a lot to do with its special qualities: it is flexible, warm, natural and environment-friendly. What makes Onix's work especially fascinating, is how they make full use of the opportunities this particular material offers for experimentation and how they push that to its limits. Always playing with both traditional craftsmanship and the latest techniques in construction, Onix designs a world that is just a little bit more exciting than usual, a world where the inhabitants and users of an environment become just a little bit more involved with that environment and with each other. Wood Works Onix offers the expertise and experience of studying, developing and realizing timber structures over a period of some 15 years in what the bureau terms 'thoughtful' architecture. Detailed drawings, sketches and photographs of the construction process for more than 20 architectural structures showcase the bureau's never-ending quest for novel applications for wood. The book also illustrates how the Onix architects assay their ideas in experimental installations, for which huts, nests, branches, tree trunks, pallets and crates are the source of inspiration. The Onix architects reveal their love for wood as a material, spanning from their childhood memories of forests to the pleasure they derive from using timber for their buildings toda http://www.naipublishers.nl/architecture/woodworks_onix_e.html (9/11/10)

Go on a journey into the vast, fantastic world of wood art with this remarkable volume. As the introductory text shows through the history of wood art the unique capacity for expression and life of this very special medium, the magnificent photographs that fill the book demonstrate the stunning mastery of Finnish artists throughout the history of the country, to give life to wood in their varied styles. Finally, the trip is made complete with the examples of Finnish literature and the delicate beauty of Finnish poetry, that celebrate wood as an essential element in the national culture, as well as some stories on the importance of trees not only for Finland, but the world.

Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen a fabulous resurgence in contemporary construction. This double-volume survey explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuring follies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood from architects in China, Chile, and everywhere in between. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in the Metropol Parasol in Seville by Jürgen Mayer H, and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, as at the Finnish Forest Research Institute by SARC Architects, or the Termas Geométricas Hot Springs Complex by Germán del Sol. True to all Taschen architecture tomes, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents, as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando to Renzo Piano. It celebrates each of these architect's vision and innovation, as well as investigating the techniques, trends, and principles that have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood's enduring appeal to our senses and our psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of Arcadian beauty and simplicity.

The chapters cover the basic principles of working with timber and provide detailed information on subjects such as thermal performance, sound insulation and fire protection. There is also a chapter devoted to the ecological significance of wood. Timber as a loadbearing material is considered and topics such as new methods of jointing, transport and erection are documented. The second part of the book presents a large number of built examples, which feature some classic structures but focus chiefly on more recent buildings. These are presented with full illustrations, details and plans which depict solutions as built for various loadbearing systems. The spectrum of timber structures presented ranges from heavy-duty bridges to multi-storey residential buildings and the magnificent Expo roof. The second chapter of examples deals specifically with topics such as facades, building envelope etc. All drawings and illustrations have been carefully produced to ensure that the details and methods of construction documented are clear and comprehensible.

Plywood is an astonishingly versatile material, made by gluing together layers of cross-grained veneers, creating a pliable board that can be stronger than solid wood. Stylish and practical, plywood offers huge possibilities for experimental design, and it has been used to make a wide range of products, from aeroplanes, boats and automobiles to architecture and furniture. This book traces the history of plywood from its use in 18th-century furniture, through its emergence as an industrial product in the 19th century, to a material celebrated by 20th-century modernists such as Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames. An ideal material for the digital age, plywood has become popular again in recent years and is widely used in contemporary design and manufacture. Produced to accompany an exhibition at the V&A, this book is the first comprehensive study of the history of plywood and its myriad applications throughout the ages, unveiling the stories behind objects that surround us and that we often take for granted.00Exhibition: Victoria & Albert Museum, London, United Kingdom (15.07. - 12.11.2017).
