De Holocaust maakte in België tienduizenden slachtoffers. Voor Joden die het overleefden, zou de oorlog nooit voorbij zijn. Immens was vaak het verlies dat ze een plaats moesten geven. Hun kinderen kregen een loodzware erfenis te verwerken. Ze moesten ook hun weg zoeken in een samenleving die pas met jaren vertraging de volle waarheid over de oorlog onder ogen wilde zien. Het zijn ervaringen waar ze een leven lang over hebben nagedacht. De getuigenissen uit de spraakmakende Canvasreeks Kinderen van de Holocaust zijn nu samengebracht in boekvorm.Het boek wordt samengesteld door Piet Boncquet en verschijnt in samenwerking met Canvas. Historicus Geert Clerbout, de eindredacteur van de documentairereeks en de auteur van onder meer Publiek geheim, schrijft het voorwoord.Piet Boncquet (1958) is historicus en archeoloog. Hij was jarenlang journalist bij de kranten Het Nieuwsblad en De Tijd. Sinds 2013 is hij freelance journalist en redacteur en schreef hij onder meer Lief en leed. Prostitutie tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog en Het Laatste Avondmaal naar Leonardo da Vinci. Een wonderlijke geschiedenis.

More than 200.000 useless people disappeared, including children. For guiding me through Austria, I used psychiatric institutions as waypoints. In these institutions psychiatric patients got euthanized. Aryan or not. Adults and children. The reasoning was simple: the cost-benefit for the society was not profitable. The result is a combination of own images, manipulated stills from propaganda movies and two digital collages. The book also deliberately plays with the expectations evoked by images. This is a dark poetic view on one of the darkest pages in the second world in Europe: the killing of incurable sick children for the sake of saving money. At the same time it questions the shift of social security towards the level of your contribution to the society and it investigates the manipulating power of images.

Voir une image, cela peut-il nous aider à mieux savoir notre histoire ? En août 1944, les membres du Sonderkommando d'Auschwitz-Birkenau réussirent à photographier clandestinement le processus d'extermination au cœur duquel ils se trouvaient prisonniers. Quatre photographies nous restent de ce moment. On tente ici d'en retracer les péripéties, d'en produire une phénoménologie, d'en saisir la nécessité hier comme aujourd'hui. Cette analyse suppose un questionnement des conditions dans lesquelles une source visuelle peut être utilisée par la discipline historique. Elle débouche, également, sur une critique philosophique de l'inimaginable dont cette histoire, la Shoah, se trouve souvent qualifiée. On tente donc de mesurer la part d'imaginable que l'expérience des camps suscite malgré tout, afin de mieux comprendre la valeur, aussi nécessaire que lacunaire, des images dans l'histoire. Il s'agit de comprendre ce que malgré tout veut dire en un tel contexte. Cette position ayant fait l'objet d'une polémique, on répond, dans une seconde partie, aux objections afin de prolonger et d'approfondir l'argument lui-même. On précise le double régime de l'image selon la valeur d'usage où on a choisi de la placer. On réfute que l'image soit toute. On observe comment elle peut toucher au réel malgré tout, et déchirer ainsi les écrans du fétichisme. On pose la question des images d'archives et de leur "lisibilité". On analyse la valeur de connaissance que prend le montage, notamment dans Shoah de Claude Lanzmann et Histoire(s) du cinéma de Jean-Luc Godard. On distingue la ressemblance du semblant (comme fausseté) et de l'assimilation (comme identité). On interroge la notion de " rédemption par l'image " chez Walter Benjamin et Siegfried Kracauer. On redécouvre avec Hannah Arendt la place de l'imagination dans la question éthique. Et l'on réinterprète notre malaise dans la culture sous l'angle de l'image à l'époque de l'imagination déchirée.
