In redelijk verstaanbare taal worden achtereenvolgens een aantal communicatiemethodieken met dove medemensen besproken. Deze methodieken worden behandeld in het licht van een stagnerende of nauwelijks aanwezige taalontwikkeling. De bedoeling van dit boekje is meer informatie te geven over de totale communicatie als methode om in "gesprek" met dove mensen te komen. In de inleiding wordt een historische schets gegeven van de communicatiemethodieken die in de loop van de tijd zijn toegepast b.v. in het dovenonderwijs (de gebarentaal en de orale methode b.v.). In hoofdstuk 2 wordt in hoofdlijnen het proces van taal en taalverwerving bij het normaal zich ontwikkelende kind besproken. In hoofdstuk 3 wordt gesproken hoe de taalontwikkeling van een pre-linguinaal doof kind verloopt. In de meeste gevallen is begeleiding in een vroeg stadium noodzakelijk.
