OASE 93 examines the recent attention that has been paid to the relationship between landscape and urban planning. This issue explores historical and contemporary attempts at defining landscape as a public project, as well as the new constellations of government, designer, and citizen that go along with this process. It also discusses the media in which landscapes are depicted for a broad audience: television programmes, atlases, exhibitions, and cultural events. Just about all aspects of urban planning and architecture have been framed in recent years as landscape: housing, recreation, heritage, and water issues. Whereas the 1990s reflected a landscape of unbridled possibilities, today the focus is on redevelopment and sustainability. The social challenge incumbent on the landscape is great. Both a clear public project and economic support are lacking, and the government often refuses to take notice. These absences are filled by the small scale, and by forms of new commons. But what is landscape without a public conversation about it? To get this conversation started, OASE goes beyond the socio-historical consensus.

Soft City begins with the big ideas of happiness and quality of life, and then shows how they are tied to the way we live. The heart of the book is highly visual and shows the building blocks for neighborhoods: building types and their organization and orientation; how we can get along as we get around a city; and living with the weather. As every citizen deals with the reality of a changing climate, Soft City explores how the built environment can adapt and respond. Soft City offers inspiration, ideas, and guidance for anyone interested in city building. Sim shows how to make any city more efficient, more livable, and better connected to the environment.

"What is the result of developing a very specific dialogue, between people with a visual impairment and non-disabled people, in a very specific environment, the historic environment of a city? This dialogue process, wich defines a cultural model of disability, is the central theme in this book. It builds on the need for adapting and modifying the environment rather than the person. This book envisions the making of a multi-sensorial city, one in which a visual esthetics is questioned by the need for functionality, other forms of perception such as tactile and auditory, and considering the co-existence of the historical and the supermodern, including the impact of new technologies. By taking visual limitations as a starting point, fresh departures are taken with questions on the development of a local accessibility policy, the design of multi-sensorial environments, and possible applications in tourism and education. At a more fundamental theoretical level, this book inquires about the nature of disability, the city and their dialectics." [Publisher]

Crossover is the very first publication by the Delft School of Design (DSD), a laboratory for research and experimentation in architecture, urbanism and technologies of construction at the TU Delft. Its investigations cover a wide variety of subjects, from theoretical considerations and historical studies to urban and architectural practices and contemporary structural design. What they all have in common is the emerging condition of architectural and urban knowledge in both the academic context and professional practice. Since its inception in 2003, the DSD has developed a strategy or field of inquiry for mapping new means of approaching the complexity of the contemporary urban and architectural conditions. Traditional approaches are seen to be increasingly inadequate in the face of this complexity. This is in part due to the nature of the information age. Yet, on the other hand, new technologies offer us the challenge and the potential to represent our world in unprecedented ways.

Zonder 'Death and Life of Great American Cities' (1961) van Jane Jacobs was de twintigste eeuw een andere geweest, schreef architectuurcriticus Bernard Hulsman in 1998.
