"Elements of Game Design" is an introductory text on game design. The goal is to teach students a structured process of design applicable to games and interactive experiences, and introduce the vocabulary and techniques of practicing game designers. The text draws on the author's experience as a professional game developer, as well as a teacher of an intro-level game development class. The book begins by introducing the user-centered design paradigm, and explain a games-specific process that splits the design problem into several conceptual stages. The bulk of the text explores those stages in detail, and teaches how to analyze and resolve them. Throughout the text we introduce the technical vocabulary and concepts used by designers in the industry, and illustrate the particular lessons with numerous real-life examples. The text ends with a review of the overall process and its application in the production of new games"--

The greatest humanitarian challenge we face today is that of providing shelter. Currently one in seven people lives in a slum or refugee camp, and more than 3,000,000,000 people-nearly half the world's population-do not have access to clean water or adequate sanitation. The physical design of our homes, neighborhoods and communities shapes every aspect of our lives. Yet too often architects are desperately needed in the places where they can least be afforded.Edited by Architecture for Humanity and now on its third printing, Design Like You Give a Damn is a compendium of innovative projects from around the world that demonstrate the power of design to improve lives. The first book to bring the best of humanitarian architecture and design to the printed page, Design Like You Give a Damn offers a history of the movement toward socially conscious design, and showcases more than 80 contemporary solutions to such urgent needs as basic shelter, healthcare, education and access to clean water, energy and sanitation.Design Like You Give a Damn is an indispensable resource for designers and humanitarian organizations charged with rebuilding after disaster and engaged in the search for sustainable development. It is also a call to action to anyone committed to building a better world.

Paper and cardboard as sustainable building materials are currently the subject of research and testing in building practice. They can be produced inexpensively, are made from renewable raw materials and are completely recyclable. The focus of their application is on temporary uses, such as for transitional schools, emergency shelters or “microhomes”. Properly protected from moisture and fire, the material proves to be durable. Design and aesthetic qualities are by no means neglected, as case studies by Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban demonstrate: the Chengdu Elementary School, the Paper Concert Hall in Aquila or the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch all provided a sign of hope after devastating earthquakes. This introduction explains the technology of building with cardboard and paper and shows a wide range of examples.
