Abstract

Processes of globalisation, economic restructuring and urban redevelopment have placed events at the centre of strategies for change in cities. Events offer the potential to achieve economic, social, cultural and environmental outcomes within broader urban development strategies. This volume: * Analyses the process of cultural event development, management and marketing and links these processes to their wider cultural, social and economic context * Provides a unique blend of practical and academic analysis, with a selection of major events and festivals in cities where eventfulness™ has been an important element of development strategy * Examines the reasons why different stakeholders should collaborate, as well as the reasons why cities succeed or fail to develop events and become eventful Eventful Cities: cultural management and urban revitalisation evaluates theoretical perspectives and links theory and practice through case studies of cities and events across the world. Critical success factors are identified which can help to guide cities and regions to develop event strategies. This book is essential reading for any undergraduate or graduate student and all practitioners and policy-makers involved in event management, cultural management, arts administration, urban studies, cultural studies and tourism.

Abstract

Abstract

For decades, neighbourhoods have been pivotal sites of social, economic and political exclusion processes, and civil society initiatives, attempting bottom-up strategies of re-development and regeneration. In many cases these efforts resulted in the creation of socially innovative organizations, seeking to satisfy the basic human needs of deprived population groups, to increase their political capabilities and to improve social interaction both internally and between the local communities, the wider urban society and the political world. Singocom-Social Innovation Governance and Community building-is the acronym of the Eu-funded project on which this book is based. Sisteen case studies of socially innovative initiatives at the neighbourhood level were carried out in nine European cities, of which ten are analysed in depth and presented here. The book compares these efforts and their results, and shows how grass-roots initiatives, alternative local movements and self-organising urban collectives are reshaping the urban scene in dynamic, creative, innovative and empowering ways. It argues that such grass-roots initiatives are vital for generating a socially cohesive urban condition that exists alongside the official state-organised forms of urban governance. The book is thus a major contribution to socio-political literature, as it seeks to overcome the duality between community-development studies and strategies, and the solidarity-based making of a diverse society based upon the recognising and maintaining of citizenship rights. It will be of particular interest to both students and researchers in the fields of urban studies, social geography and political science. --Book Jacket.

Abstract

Crossover is the very first publication by the Delft School of Design (DSD), a laboratory for research and experimentation in architecture, urbanism and technologies of construction at the TU Delft. Its investigations cover a wide variety of subjects, from theoretical considerations and historical studies to urban and architectural practices and contemporary structural design. What they all have in common is the emerging condition of architectural and urban knowledge in both the academic context and professional practice. Since its inception in 2003, the DSD has developed a strategy or field of inquiry for mapping new means of approaching the complexity of the contemporary urban and architectural conditions. Traditional approaches are seen to be increasingly inadequate in the face of this complexity. This is in part due to the nature of the information age. Yet, on the other hand, new technologies offer us the challenge and the potential to represent our world in unprecedented ways.

Abstract

Abstract

Soft City begins with the big ideas of happiness and quality of life, and then shows how they are tied to the way we live. The heart of the book is highly visual and shows the building blocks for neighborhoods: building types and their organization and orientation; how we can get along as we get around a city; and living with the weather. As every citizen deals with the reality of a changing climate, Soft City explores how the built environment can adapt and respond. Soft City offers inspiration, ideas, and guidance for anyone interested in city building. Sim shows how to make any city more efficient, more livable, and better connected to the environment.

Abstract

"What is the result of developing a very specific dialogue, between people with a visual impairment and non-disabled people, in a very specific environment, the historic environment of a city? This dialogue process, wich defines a cultural model of disability, is the central theme in this book. It builds on the need for adapting and modifying the environment rather than the person. This book envisions the making of a multi-sensorial city, one in which a visual esthetics is questioned by the need for functionality, other forms of perception such as tactile and auditory, and considering the co-existence of the historical and the supermodern, including the impact of new technologies. By taking visual limitations as a starting point, fresh departures are taken with questions on the development of a local accessibility policy, the design of multi-sensorial environments, and possible applications in tourism and education. At a more fundamental theoretical level, this book inquires about the nature of disability, the city and their dialectics." [Publisher]
