"A beautifully designed square where you are almost blown over, an apartment in the city where the summer heat keeps you awake at night. We all know examples of urban and landcape architectural design that doesn't sufficiently take the urban climate into account. With clear texts and insightful and inspirational illustrations, this book shows how clever urban design can make the city more comfortable. The way we experience the microclimate depends on physical and environmental psychological factors. Based on these factors, the way the basic processes of the urban climate work, and how these can be influenced through spatial planning and urban design are explained. Weather in the city. How Design Shapes the Urban Climate is richly illustrated with photographs, illustrations and many examples from temperate climate regions all over the world. It is a reference work as well as an inspirational book for everyone working on a liveable city: commissioners, policymakers, professionals and students in urban design, landscape architecture and planning." Soft City begins with the big ideas of happiness and quality of life, and then shows how they are tied to the way we live. The heart of the book is highly visual and shows the building blocks for neighborhoods: building types and their organization and orientation; how we can get along as we get around a city; and living with the weather. As every citizen deals with the reality of a changing climate, Soft City explores how the built environment can adapt and respond. Soft City offers inspiration, ideas, and guidance for anyone interested in city building. Sim shows how to make any city more efficient, more livable, and better connected to the environment.

Bron: https://www.standaardboekhandel.be/seo/nl/boeken/algemeen/9789029093064/richard-sennett/stadsleven

A quoi ressemblera notre futur ?

Crossover is the very first publication by the Delft School of Design (DSD), a laboratory for research and experimentation in architecture, urbanism and technologies of construction at the TU Delft. Its investigations cover a wide variety of subjects, from theoretical considerations and historical studies to urban and architectural practices and contemporary structural design. What they all have in common is the emerging condition of architectural and urban knowledge in both the academic context and professional practice. Since its inception in 2003, the DSD has developed a strategy or field of inquiry for mapping new means of approaching the complexity of the contemporary urban and architectural conditions. Traditional approaches are seen to be increasingly inadequate in the face of this complexity. This is in part due to the nature of the information age. Yet, on the other hand, new technologies offer us the challenge and the potential to represent our world in unprecedented ways.

For decades, neighbourhoods have been pivotal sites of social, economic and political exclusion processes, and civil society initiatives, attempting bottom-up strategies of re-development and regeneration. In many cases these efforts resulted in the creation of socially innovative organizations, seeking to satisfy the basic human needs of deprived population groups, to increase their political capabilities and to improve social interaction both internally and between the local communities, the wider urban society and the political world. Singocom-Social Innovation Governance and Community building-is the acronym of the Eu-funded project on which this book is based. Sisteen case studies of socially innovative initiatives at the neighbourhood level were carried out in nine European cities, of which ten are analysed in depth and presented here. The book compares these efforts and their results, and shows how grass-roots initiatives, alternative local movements and self-organising urban collectives are reshaping the urban scene in dynamic, creative, innovative and empowering ways. It argues that such grass-roots initiatives are vital for generating a socially cohesive urban condition that exists alongside the official state-organised forms of urban governance. The book is thus a major contribution to socio-political literature, as it seeks to overcome the duality between community-development studies and strategies, and the solidarity-based making of a diverse society based upon the recognising and maintaining of citizenship rights. It will be of particular interest to both students and researchers in the fields of urban studies, social geography and political science. --Book Jacket.
