This book provides a historical-sociological analysis of the history of sociology in Belgium from the late-nineteenth until the early-twenty-first century. It sheds new light on the social structures that shaped and shape the orientations and work of sociologists in Belgium. The impact of three structural factors is discussed in more detail: religion, language and publication imperatives. Starting from analyses of these structural factors, this book presents a detailed analysis of the genesis and institutionalization of different sociologies in Belgium. It sheds light on the kinds of sociological knowledge that are or are not valued in Belgium. This book constitutes an important contribution to the sociological history of sociology and the development of a reflective historical sociology, and will appeal to students and scholars of social theory, as well as readers interested in the history of Contemporary Belgium.

Comment s'est formée la langue qu'on nous enseigne à l'école? Pour quelles raisons le dialecte dont elle est issue a-t-il fini par s'imposer aux autres, à se standardiser d'une façon aussi stricte? Pourquoi investissons-nous tant de passion dans la langue nationale? Pour comprendre la singularité française, Anthony Lodge a entrepris de raconter l'histoire du français depuis ses origines gauloises jusqu'à nos jours. Tout commence avec la latinisation de la Gaule, suivie, sous l'influence des invasions barbares du Ve siècle, de la formation des langues gallo-romaines (comme l'occitan et le picard), chaque région réalisant une synthèse originale. Ce sera finalement la langue du roi qui l'emporta: Paris imposera ses normes à une province tout à la fois fascinée et exaspérée par la " belle langue " aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Plus tard, avec la Révolution, le français deviendra le symbole de l'unité nationale puis, sous la IIIe République, l'expression du génie français. Mais l'histoire n'a pas pris congé pour autant, et le français est toujours le lieu d'une tension permanente. C'est ainsi que l'usage connaît d'importantes divergences selon le sexe, la région, l'âge, la classe sociale. Quant à la rigidité de la langue écrite, elle a aujourd'hui pour corollaire l'éclatement de la langue parlée, refuge de l'inventivité sociale et culturelle. Que nous réservent les temps nouveaux? Cette superbe fresque de notre histoire, politique autant que linguistique, est enrichie de nombreuses citations de textes anciens, modernes ou contemporains et d'une cartographie originale. R. Anthony Lodge est professeur de français à l'université de Saint-Andrews, en Grande-Bretagne. Il a consacré ses principaux ouvrages à l'étude de la langue française et de l'occitan au Moyen Age.
