Missionaries have been subject to academic and societal debate. Some scholars highlight their contribution to the spread of modernity and development among local societies, whereas others question their motives and emphasise their inseparable connection with colonialism. In this volume, fifteen authors - from both Europe and the Global South - address these often polemical positions by focusing on education, one of the most prominent fields in which missionaries have been active. They elaborate on Protestantism as well as Catholicism, work with cases from the 18th to the 21st century, and cover different colonial empires in Asia and Africa. The volume introduces new angles, such as gender, the agency of the local population, and the perspective of the child.

Wervel publiceerde een nieuw boek over de interafhankelijkeid van Brazilië-Europa, Brazilië-China. Internationaal dreigt denken en handelen i.v.m. 'duurzame ontwikkeling' bezet te worden door de industrie met zijn zogenaamde 'groene economie' (in het Portugees: 'capitalismo verde'), die vooral niet wil doorstoten naar een 'ecologische economie'. Het nieuwe Wervelboek ontmaskert heel wat vormen van Greenwashing en Newspeak, in dienst van 'meer van hetzelfde', maar nu onder de vorm van 'groen kapitalisme'. Het is het vierde Wervelboek dat gelijktijdig in het Nederlands en Portugees verschijnt en dat in de vorm van korte ervaringsverhalen ('crónicas' in het Portugees) moeilijke kwesties als Wereldbank, Wereldhandelsorganisatie WTO, nanotechnologie, etc. in eenvoudige en aanprekende taal probeert te brengen. 'Legal!' heeft in het Portugees een dubbele betekenis: 'plezant/leuk!' en 'legaal'. De grootgrondbezitters stellen graag: 'Alles wat wij doen, bijvoorbeeld ontbossen, is legaal'. Het boek eindigt met de slottekst van Nyeleni-Europe. In augustus 2011 schoolden 400 Europeanen uit 34 landen samen in Krems te Oostenrijk om het nieuwe concept van 'Voedselsoevereiniteit' concreet te maken. Met een voorwoord van Herman Verbeek.
