De Eerste Wereldoorlog en daarop volgende revoluties hadden Hongarije uitgeput. Buitenlandse hulp kwam er eerst in de vorm van hulpgoederen verstrekt door het Rode Kruis. Daarna volgde een tweede internationale actie: tussen 1920 en 1930 werden ruim 60.000 kinderen voor enkele maanden naar het buitenland gebracht om bij te komen. De kindertreinen reden vooral naar Nederland en België, enkele naar Zwitserland, Zweden en Groot-Brittannië. Het verblijf in het buitenland had grote invloed op het leven van deze kinderen en hun familie. Sommige kinderen bleven zelfs bij het pleeggezin wonen, anderen hielden contact. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd de kinderactie op veel kleinere schaal herhaald. Er ontstonden intensieve persoonlijke, culturele, academische en economische contacten tussen Hongarije aan de ene en Nederland en België aan de andere kant. Deze rijk geïllustreerde bundel, waarvan ook een Hongaarse editie verschijnt bij uitgeverij L’Harmattan, beschrijft verschillende aspecten van de kinderactie.
