Abstract

This book takes a wide-ranging and non-dogmatic view of SDG12, tackling various approaches as to how production and consumption can provide for human well-being while minimizing destructive effects on the biophysical environment. With chapters focusing on circular economies, product accounting systems, and sustainable procurement, this volume presents technical information in an accessible way and provides a much-needed overview of activity and approaches to achieving the development goal. The authors provide a thorough understanding of the history and effectiveness of SDG 12 by juxtaposing competing theories of sustainable production and consumption, from critics who advocate a "degrowth" agenda to explicitly neo- liberal approaches. They also examine the underlying contradictions in these theories and the degree to which these competing approaches can complement one another.

Abstract

This book bridges the gap between Education for Sustainable Development and community development and examines the contributions of critical environmental education as a theoretical framework to the policy, research, and practice of Education for Sustainable Development. The book investigates what Education for Sustainable Development really means when it happens from the perspectives of a marginalized individual at the very bottom of society in a local community, where there is no such 'educational' institution, no policy or no curriculum to support the effort, but there is the necessity of learning and empowerment for changing the situation. In particular, drawing on the experience of the indigenous Ainu fisherman, it critically examines the theoretical foundation of Education for Sustainable Development, critical environmental education, investigating methodologically and epistemologically the relevance and efficacy of critical environmental education to socially critical approaches to Education for Sustainable Development in a community development context. And this investigation leads to develop a praxis framework for socially critical Education for Sustainable Development in a community development context so that both fields would be mutually supportive to strengthen the practices. .

Abstract

The implementation of the circular economy will entail a major transformation from a resource-destroying, linear economy to a circular one that operates within the planet’s regenerative boundaries. This book presents an interim assessment of the implementation of a circular economy in the EU. It reveals what achievements have been made in various EU institutions, but which are scarcely perceived by the public; which basic scientific principles can be applied in this context; and what NGOs are demanding beyond this progress. It provides convincing arguments for abandoning the “hamster wheel” of material-based satisfaction of our needs, and shows that the primacy of the economy stands in the way of a good life for all. Given its focus, it will appeal to everyone interested in an ecologically sustainable economic system.

Abstract

The volume provides a unique view on multidimensional crises, their interplay, and possible resolutions for sustainable life patterns and is therefore broadly related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Traditional unidimensional and technocratic strategies often fall short. Ultimately, people, their behavior and their habits are at the source of many problems. Therefore, it is imperative to take people, their multifaceted nature and the necessary learning and educational processes into account when striving towards a better life for everyone. Abstract

In today’s ever globalised world, we are witness to a shifting world order with significant changes not only in political-economic relationships but also in the changing demographics of developing nations. This handbook explores how many developing countries have remained extremely vulnerable to external shocks of all kinds, and the need for the global community to face up to the shared challenges of sustainable development, i.e. to search for a social, economic, financial and environmentally sustainable path for the global economy. There are deep and strategically crucial, conceptual and policy links between development paths and the multi-dimensional questions of sustainability. Yet, these links, currently, are not well examined analytically or documented in the current literature of development economics. Each chapter in this handbook explores these conceptual and policy links by setting appropriate questions and critically reviewing relevant literature. Taking on these challenges, while remaining relevant to real world issues, requires critical appraisal of a variety of methodological approaches and analytical tools. Such thoughts and approaches will lead to a formulation of fresh policy perspectives for addressing challenges and advancing sustainable development in the ever inter-connected, dynamically evolving and globalised environments of the 21st century.
