Abstract

This book examines the relationship between tourism and earthquakes through all stages of a disaster. It discusses the measures for managing tourism after earthquakes and examines the means to mitigate the impacts of earthquakes. It provides insights into the ethical, commercial and socioeconomic issues facing tourism after a major earthquake.

Abstract

Disaster Management of Earthquakes Earthquakes and Volcanoes. It includes brief overview of disaster management with increased focus on the design and structures. It include brief definitions of early signs and after effects of both earthquakes and volcanoes with international guidelines. Provides the reader with insights into the effective disaster management of earthquake and volcanoes, so as to develop disaster resilient structures and spread awareness among population. Also, it will help in understanding why some places are more prone to disasters.

Abstract

The primary goals of this brief are to invoke alertness and solidarity among the public in earthquake prone areas of India, and to empower the community to prepare themselves to face and manage the aftermath of an earthquake. The work presented here sheds new light on the action plans to be taken by the common public and public agencies, before, during and after earthquakes to safeguard lives of people and minimize loss of assets. This carefully presented book articulates various factors related to earthquake preparedness, and develops guidelines and useful tips for communicating them to relevant stakeholders. The book has been divided into three parts: (i) the first providing background which explains earthquakes in general and seismicity of India (ii) the second explores earthquake preparedness intended for individuals, families and various stakeholders, and (iii) the final section which describes various strategies for communities to prepare themselves for a future earthquake.

Abstract

This book provides a short, hands-on introduction to the science of complexity using simple computational models of natural complex systems-with models and exercises drawn from physics, chemistry, geology, and biology. By working through the models and engaging in additional computational explorations suggested at the end of each chapter, readers very quickly develop an understanding of how complex structures and behaviors can emerge in natural phenomena as diverse as avalanches, forest fires, earthquakes, chemical reactions, animal flocks, and epidemic diseases.Natural Complexity provides the necessary topical background, complete source codes in Python, and detailed explanations for all computational models. Ideal for undergraduates, beginning graduate students, and researchers in the physical and natural sciences, this unique handbook requires no advanced mathematical knowledge or programming skills and is suitable for self-learners with a working knowledge of precalculus and high-school physics.Self-contained and accessible, Natural Complexity enables readers to identify and quantify common underlying structural and dynamical patterns shared by the various systems and phenomena it examines, so that they can form their own answers to the questions of what natural complexity is and how it arises.
