"The book delves into the urgent topic of media ownership in Africa. It starts from a much-needed historical perspective then covers contemporary digital developments and the Chinese strategic involvement in the continent. This book examines the evolving forms of media ownership in Africa and how they interact with broader geopolitical changes in and outside the continent. The contributions look at different media ownerships and their implications on freedoms, governance, development and democracy across the continent to give a rich account of how power structures are both evolving yet challenged offering an ever-growing media ecosystem. Offering a significant representation of the diversity of existing media systems, the book goes beyond the postcolonial geographical divisions of North and South Africa to highlight common patterns and significant similarities and differences between the diverse African countries. The contributors to the volume expose media patterns that are shifting, battling, resurging, evolving but most importantly affecting development and democracy in a complex way. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of media and communications in Africa"--

"This book critically explores how meanings of 'independence' are constructed and reconfigured by public service broadcasters in the global south, with a particular focus on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Responding to the ideological trappings wrought by modernity and coloniality, which continue to influence the way broadcasters and media in the global south operate, Blessed Ngwenya questions traditional institutional, political-economy and world systems paradigms, and presents a radical local understanding of freedom in the present day. The author draws on an empirical study of 36 in-depth interviews with members of staff from the SABC, including board members, senior management, and journalists, offering an intimate insight into how the participants themselves perceive, understand, and deal with the issues and problems they face in relation to independence. Framed by a rich analysis of the historical events necessitating such investigations, this book provides readers with the theoretical and empirical toolkit needed to place the everyday worlds and needs of their subjects first, and to ultimately arrive at an accurate understanding of independence in its several senses. Contributing to growing global debates on the decolonisation of knowledge, this book is critical reading for advanced scholars and researchers of African media, culture, communication and epistemic freedom"--

"From its emergence as a modest newspaper to becoming the largest communication group in Argentina, and one of the main communications groups in Latin America, this book examines the media conglomerate Grupo Clarín. Guillermo Mastrini, Martín Becerra and Ana Bizberge analyse the group's corporate structure and the aspects that have contributed to its expansion throughout its history, mapping its stages of growth to the regulatory policies, cultural politics, economics and political history of Argentina over the last few decades. This book offers a compelling analysis of one of the key players in the Latin American communication and information market, highlighting how the conglomerate has continued to grow under various different governments - by achieving legal reforms and influencing policies - and continues to have great capacity to influence the policy and regulation of the system, the market structure and cultural consumption in the region. Ideal for students, scholars and researchers of global media, political economy, and media and communication, especially those with an interest in Latin America"--

This book analyses the adaptivity of public service media (PSM) to the digital network age. The authors use specific case studies and research initiatives, involving a variety of methodological and theoretical approaches, to argue that current changes in media and society offer a wide range of possibilities for PSM renewal. Changes in PSM are analysed through the lenses of shifts in users' behavior and the growing importance of big data, machine mediation and developing partnership systems alongside other agents in the overall media ecology. The authors map the potential mental, regulatory, institutional and financial indicators which might restrict the ways in which PSM adapts. They argue that PSM renewal is possible as long as PSM policy-makers and managers both recognize and understand the drivers for, and obstacles to, change. «What is the role of Public Service Media in the digital era? While pundits either call for its abolishment or fend off any criticism, the present volume avoids simplistic answers and offers valuable inputs for academic and policy debates.» Manuel Puppis, University of Fribourg, Switzerland. «This volume presents a multi-layered analytical prism through the lenses of which conditions for public service media future may be viewed. An excellent source for media studies with country cases and general evaluation.» Andrei Richter, Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Vienna, Austria.

India's State-run Media presents a new perspective on broadcasting by bringing together two neglected areas of research in media studies in India - the intertwined genealogies of sovereignty, public, religion, and nation in radio and television, and the spatiotemporal dynamics of broadcasting into a single analytic inquiry. It argues that the spatiotemporalities of broadcasting and the inter-relationships among the public, religion, and nation can be traced to an organizing concept that shaped India's late colonial and postcolonial histories - sovereignty. The book contends that studies of television have glossed over the meanings, experiences, and practices of the religious in televisual narratives and viewers' interpretations of television programs. Drawing on the philosophical writings of Paul Ricoeur and Michel Foucault, connecting their ideas with media, cultural, and religious studies, it examines cultural discourses, power relations, repertoire of meanings, social events, etc. in broadcasting in late colonial and postcolonial India.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of Japan’s media policies. In light of the attention Japanese media content has attracted in recent years, not only in Japan but also overseas, the book examines the media industry that supports such content. Beginning with the traditional terrestrial broadcasting industry, it also covers cable TV, satellite broadcasting, and over-the-top media services (OTT), as well as media policies for film, animation, games and music. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), a key media industry regulator in Japan, has been developing broadcasting policies for more than 70 years, and while their traditional policies have not changed in principle, the scope of their business sphere has expanded. For instance, major broadcasting stations in Tokyo, known as key stations, have played an important role in filmmaking with the big four film companies, and have started joint ventures with major OTT, such as Hulu. This book allows readers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the changes in the Japanese media industry in general and the related policies in Japan, while also offering insights into developments in the individual sectors.
